Calxeda Hires Gopal Hegde as Chief Operating Officer
Cisco Executive Joins Fast Growing Semiconductor Company with Over 100 Employees, 100 Million in Funding, and a GenerallyAvailable Product
November 20, 2012 -- Calxeda, a leader in the low power server market, today announced the addition of Gopal Hegde as Chief Operating Officer. Hegde joins the company as it closes another $55 million funding and tops 100 employees in Austin and the Bay Area, with subsidiaries in Asia. As Calxeda rapidly expands its own employees as well as growing list of partners and customers, with general availability of its first products, Hegde is critical in leading the strategic direction of Calxeda’s engineering, architecture and manufacturing operations.
“It’s great to have Gopal join our executive team,” said Barry Evans, co-founder and CEO, Calxeda. “Gopal’s 20 years experience, especially while at Cisco leading its Unified Computing System (UCS) product line, brings us extremely relevant expertise at just the right time.”
As Calxeda’s COO, Hegde is responsible for engineering, architecture and manufacturing operations. He joins Calxeda with over 20 years experience driving significant technology and product innovations in silicon, software and systems engineering. Hegde joined from Cisco where he was a Senior Director of Engineering and an early member of the management team that drove design and development of Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS) product line. Prior to Cisco, Hegde worked for Adaptec where he managed Adaptec RAID engineering team driving revenues in excess of $180M per year.
Hegde joined Adaptec from Intel where he was responsible for Server Platform IO Architecture and planning. In this role, he led the task force that proposed architecture for integration of PCIe into Intel CPUs. He also drove technology development and standardization of Backplane Ethernet (IEEE 802.3ap) Data Center Bridging (DCBX), Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and IO Virtualization technologies for Intel servers. Hegde holds an MSECE from University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and an ME from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India.
“There is something electric happening at Calxeda and the whole industry is talking about it and closely watching what we do,” said Hegde. “I am honoured to have the opportunity to be part of the leadership team driving Calxeda forward to truly change computing – especially data centers – for the better.”
Hegde joins a Calxeda executive team comprised of leaders previously with companies like Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Marvell, Polycom, SigmaTel and now Cisco. Hegde leads a team based in both the Austin Calxeda headquarters, as well as Calxeda’s new California office located in the Bay Area. The company also announced Asian subsidiaries and partners in June 2012 which gives Calxeda live presence in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan.
