KALRAY successfully completes the Prometheus project and secures a new funding round of 5 M Euros
Orsay, Paris, France -- January 22nd, 2013 — KALRAY SA , today announces that it has successfully completed the Prometheus project with 8 other partners, an achievement that allows KALRAY to secure a new funding round of 5 M€.
Created in 2008, KALRAY is a fabless semiconductor and software company developing, marketing and selling a new and very innovative generation of manycore processors for the professional electronics industry (image, audio and signal processing, scientific computing, communications infrastructures, control command). Led by Joël Monnier, former vice president of STMicroelectronics, KALRAY employs 55 engineers and is backed by French investment funds, local funds, private investors, and the French governmental agencies. To sustain its business growth and commercial development, KALRAY has just secured of new funding round of 5 M€ from its historical investors both private and institutional including ACE Management and InnoCap .
Started in 2009, Prometheus is the 22 million Euros foundation project that supported the development of the high performance, low power MPPA MANYCORE processor and its software development environment. Prometheus contributed to the creation and growth of KALRAY’s ecosystem of industrial partners and sustained the effort to integrate the MPPA solution with several key third party technologies. The outcomes of the project were presented during the final review of the project in December 2012:
The MPPA MANYCORE processor was demonstrated in the MPPA DEVELOPER “all-in-one” development environment. Applications in the video processing, cryptography, and signal processing domains were successfully exercised on the processor. MPPA ACCESSCORE , KALRAY’s high level parallel programming environment, was showcased fully integrated in Eclipse.
MicroEJ , the Java programming and runtime environment from IS2T was shown running on the MPPA MANYCORE, processor including IS2T fast and low memory footprint Java virtual machine.
Finally, together with DOCEA POWER , a power consumption analysis and optimization tool was demonstrated. This tool integrates DOCEA POWER unique simulation technology with MPPA high level simulators to provide accurate power consumption estimations for an application during development phase.
“KALRAY’s technology has been developed with many OEM partners across several vertical markets as well as through partnering with third party software vendors,” said Joël Monnier , KALRAY CEO.
“During Prometheus final review, we have demonstrated that our MPPA MANYCORE chip has reached the “silicon proven” status and that our MPPA DEVELOPER solution is ready for the market”.
“Integrating our MicroEJ technology to MPPA MANYCORE brings very promising business opportunities to both IS2T and KALRAY” added Fred Rivard, IS2T CEO. “It will contribute to the reduction of MPPA MANYCORE applications design time & cost through its rich and high level development environment”.
“Modeling and co-simulating power consumption of applications running on a manycore processor as complex as MPPA was an interesting challenge” said Sylvain Kaiser, DOCEA POWER CTO. “With our solution, MPPA application developers can monitor the power consumption of their code down to each function, with an excellent accuracy and in a timely manner”.

The company has offices near Grenoble, France, and in San Jose, California, USA, and sales offices in Japan and Korea.
About the Prometheus project
Prometheus was an industrial R&D project, led by KALRAY, that contributed to the emergence of a new generation of programmable high performance massively parallel processors. The technologies developed target the fields of image processing, signal processing, control, communications and data security with access cost optimum for all low to medium volume applications. Nine partners contributed to the Prometheus project: KALRAY , ASYGN , IS2T , DOCEA POWER , BLUE EYE VIDEO, SAFERIVER , COFLUENT DESIGN , EVERSAT , and IFOTEC .
OSEO brought 10 M€ funding to the Prometheus project on a total budget of 22 M€.
About OSEO
The Strategic Industrial Innovation Programme – or ISI, due to its French acronym – promotes the emergence of European champions. It supports innovative, ambitious, collaborative projects, which are industry-oriented and led by intermediate companies and SMEs, all advancing state-of-the-art technologies. When successful, these projects have a very promising outcome, as they aim at commercializing the innovations arising from technological breakthroughs, which would not be otherwise carried out without public funding. Funds are allocated in the form of grants and loans, ranging from 3 to 10M€.
