Virage Logic Announces Licensing Agreement With STMicroelectronics for SRAM Embedded Memories
World's Second Largest Chip Manufacturer to Incorporate Virage Logic Memory on Its Chips
Fremont, CA - May 30, 2002, Virage Logic Corp. (Nasdaq: VIRL), the global leader in embedded memory technology, today announced an agreement to deliver its high density SRAM embedded memories on STMicroelectronics' (NYSE: STM) 0.13-micron process. STMicroelectronics will use Virage Logic embedded memories in its chips to gain key advantages of low power and high density for products aimed at high-growth markets in telecom, computer peripherals, digital consumer devices, automotive, communications and smart cards.
Specifically, STMicroelectronics will license Virage Logic's high-density (HD) Area Speed and Power (ASAP) SRAM and ROM embedded memories on their 0.13-micron process. As a result of the agreement, STMicroelectronics will immediately offer lower power and higher density embedded memory resources as part of their design environment for chip applications. Now STMicroelectronics can provide its customers with a lower power, higher density embedded memory offering fabricated on a standard logic process to complement its high speed, high density capability.
"Virage Logic has the most complete embedded memory technology on the market today. By embedding Virage Logic's SRAM-based and ROM ASAP into our products, STMicroelectronics chips will benefit from the additional power and area savings that Virage Logic's embedded memories offer. We will be able to get better products to market faster, which is vital in our consumer-driven, high-growth markets," said Christopher Frey, embedded SRAM program manager, Central R&D, at STMicroelectronics.
"STMicroelectronics has the market power to drive Virage Logic embedded memory architecture into their high-volume, consumer-driven markets, greatly increasing the applications and chip volumes for our embedded memory products," said Krishna Balachandran, director of product marketing at Virage Logic. "As embedded memory on SoCs increases, Virage Logic's ASAP SRAM embedded memories are an economical and efficient way to embed multiple instances totaling megabits of SRAM into SoC designs."
