Xilinx Changes Programmable Logic Landscape with Expanded Virtex-II Pro Family
Virtex-II Pro solution leads industry in density, performance, memory, DSP processing, multi-gigabit serial technology, embedded processing, and value
SAN JOSE, CALIF - June 17, 2002 - Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) announced today the expansion of the industry-leading Virtex-II ProTM FPGA family with five new devices and new price points. The new Virtex-II Pro devices expand the family to ten, with the largest of the new devices setting new records for logic, memory, DSP, processing, and I/O capacity. Xilinx is able to respond to the customer demand, seen following its Programmable World 2002 event held in April, with these new members due to the successful delivery of the tools, the initial devices, and the process, as well as the acceleration to 300-mm wafers. Also announced were new price points for the family. With the new pricing, Virtex-II Pro FPGAs deliver cost savings of 40 percent over any other competitive FPGA offerings of comparable logic cell, memory density, and performance.
The Virtex-II Pro family, shipping since February this year, is the world's first 130 nm CMOS FPGA family and the first and only to offer integrated PowerPC microprocessor technology and 3.125 Gb/sec serial transceivers. In the new pricing structure, the Virtex-II Pro devices include multiple PowerPC CPUs and multi-gigabit serial transceivers at no additional charge, providing unequaled capability and value for today's system design requirements.
New heights in the Xilinx leadership advantage
The new XC2VP125TM FPGA device is the world's highest capacity, highest performance, and highest capability programmable logic device. Delivering more than 125,000 logic cells, the XC2VP125 device also features over ten megabits of RAM; 556 Xtreme DSP multiply units; 12 digital clock management units; four 32-bit PowerPCTM RISC CPUs delivering greater than 2000 Dhrystone MIPS; and 24 integrated 3.125 Gb/sec Rocket IOTM transceivers providing an aggregate payload bandwidth of 120 Gb/sec. The device provides up to 1200 SelectIOTM pins offering CMOS, SSTL, HSTL, LVDS, GTL, and 3.3V PCI signaling packaged in a flip-chip technology 1696-pin package.
"The Virtex brand has been the number one choice of designers worldwide based on its industry-leading capacity, performance, capabilities, and cost-effectiveness. In each generation of families, our mission is to deliver significantly-enhanced functionality while driving down prices," said Erich Goetting, vice president and general manager of the Advanced Products Division at Xilinx. "We continue this strategy in the Virtex-II Pro family by including state-of-the-art multi-gigabit serial transceivers and high-performance PowerPC RISC CPUs in the standard feature set at no charge. Thus, we enable the creation of next-generation systems designs at previously unattainable price points."
"Virtex-II Pro devices provide critical elements of system-level design"
"With the immersion of PowerPC cores, Xilinx has developed the optimal platform to implement our storage network designs," said Sandy Helton, executive VP and CTO, SAN Valley. "Virtex-II Pro devices provide the critical elements of system-level design, including high-speed serial I/O, making it an ideal combination for our next generation products. Moreover, the unique architectural synthesis design environment allows us to make hardware and software tradeoffs throughout the design cycle."
Pricing and availability
The Virtex-II Pro family is now offered with three speed grades: the original "-6" and "-7" as well as the new "-5". New pricing for the Virtex-II Pro devices is under $40 for the XC2VP2TM device; under $100 for the XC2VP7TM device; under $200 for the XC2VP20TM device; and $1500 for the XC2VP70TM device (25,000 units, second half 2003).
The previously announced XC2VP2 and XC2VP20 devices will be available by late summer, and the new XC2VP50TM and the XC2VP70 devices will be available by the end of the year. The XC2VP30TM, XC2VP40TM, XC2VP100TM, and XC2VP125 devices will be available in 2003. The support for new members will be available in the next generation of the ISE software, due out later this year. (The XC2VP4 and XC2VP7 have been shipping since February 2002 with software support in ISE 4.2i.)
