KALRAY to showcase world's first ultra low power, live Ultra HD (4K, 60fps) HEVC encoder at NAB 2014 in collaboration with DivX
Orsay, Paris, April 4, 2014 — KALRAY, the designer and exclusive provider of the low-power, high-performance MPPA MANYCORE processor, today announced plans to demonstrate at NAB 2014 in Las Vegas, the world’s first low power live Ultra HD HEVC (4K, 60fps) encoder, running on the KALRAY MPPA MANYCORE processor.
The MPPA-256, KALRAY’s first MPPA® MANYCORE processor featuring 256 cores on a single chip, will be used for this low-power demonstration at NAB 2014, being held in Las Vegas (April 7-10). The MPPA-256 processor demonstrates a complete Ultra HD HEVC live encoding stream based on DivX® HEVC UltraHD video.
The MainConcept HEVC SDK is used in the demo and is capable of encoding a high-quality Ultra HD HEVC video at 60 fps using 2048 MPPA processor cores dispatched on two standard PCIe acceleration boards. This solution achieves an unprecedented power efficiency for less than 50 Watts per board.
KALRAY and DivX plan to host demonstrations at the DivX Booth (#SU 9110). The MPPA MANYCORE processor opens exciting new possibilities to the video broadcast market as it brings more energy efficiency and flexibility to cloud infrastructures used by content providers to encode, decode or transcode video streams for the growing demand of multi-screen devices such as tablets and smartphones.
DivX HEVC is part of an end-to-end solution helping to accelerate the adoption of the next-generation compression standard across the entire video distribution system. The solution includes MainConcept encoding SDKs for professional content creators, the DivX Video Service™ with studio approved DivX DRM for protected content delivery across multi-screen devices, and popular DivX consumer software tools for PC-based content creation and playback. In addition, DivX HEVC is integrated into the DivX Certification program that allows IC and OEM customers to quickly bring to market mobile and consumer electronics products that enable consistently high-quality DivX HEVC video playback.
“We are excited to work with Kalray to integrate the MainConcept HEVC encoder into their MPPA MANYCORE processor to support real-time DivX HEVC encoding and streaming up to 4K Ultra HD. Kalray’s high performance and energy efficient hardware makes it a great solution for compute intensive server applications.” said Thomas Kramer, VP of Product Management at DivX LLC.
Eric Baissus, CEO of KALRAY, adds: “We are delighted working with such an experienced company as DivX. Kalray’s manycore architecture combined with DivX software provides a unique solution for HEVC encoding and streaming booming market.”
