Wipro Technologies announces licensing of its Intellectual Properties in Wireless LAN
Bangalore, July 30, 2002 - Wipro Technologies, the global IT Services division of Wipro Limited (NYSE:WIT), today announced that it has licensed its Wireless LAN IP's in 802.11 MAC to customers for development of embedded systems for wireless connectivity. Among Wipro's customers for its 802.11 MAC IPs are a large consumer electronics company and a US-based provider of DSP. Wipro's IEEE 802.11 MAC core consists of a synthesizable core and firmware for the implementation of wireless systems.
IEEE 802.11 or Wireless LAN technology is driven by the market need for various applications including wireless surfing of the Internet. IEEE 802.11 has been successfully deployed in various countries in locations such as Airports, coffee shops, etc.
"We are happy that our customers have endorsed our leadership in connectivity technologies, both in wireline as well as wireless space. We have developed a large number of Intellectual Property and technology building blocks for catering to the needs of our customers in IT Platforms, Consumer, Automotive and Industrial automation industries. We are pleased to see that our Wireless LAN solution is being recognized for its performance and flexible architecture" said Ramesh Emani, Chief Executive, Embedded & Access Solutions at Wipro Technologies.
Wipro's IEEE 802.11 MAC has been architected to be extremely flexible to support both embedded and host kind of applications. It has the optimum hardware and software partitioning of MAC to easily and seamlessly accommodate future standards that will support features like QoS, roaming, security etc. and is extremely low on power consumption. Wipro's IEEE 802.11 MAC IP can support data rates up to 108 Mbps, and is designed to work with both IEEE 802.11a and IEEE 802.11b systems. It also supports the CardBus functionality to address the growing market of PC/PCMCIA card chip manufacturers.
Elaborating further, Dilip Thakur, Vice-President of Embedded and Internet Access Division said "Wipro is well equipped to handle the demands of the Wireless LAN customers. Customers want to license cores, only if they are convinced that they can upgrade the cores to incorporate Security, QoS and Roaming without having to redo the chip. Wipro's design enables customers to license the cores today and take software upgrades later as new standards get ratified."
Apart from IEEE 802.11 IPs, Wipro has a suite of IPs in 1394, USB, Ethernet, Bluetooth and Home Networking software. Wipro supports it's portfolio of IEEE 802.11 IPs with a comprehensive range of VLSI, System design and embedded software expertise that allows clients to receive a total end to end solution.
Wipro Technologies or Answer Systems, Wipro's distributor of IPs in Europe, can be contacted for a demonstration of the 802.11 MAC solution.
