Silicon Wave Licenses WIDCOMM Software for Blue802 Coexistence Solution
Bluetooth™ For Windows® (BTW) Software Completes Turnkey Solution Available to OEMs Designing PC Products With Integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Wireless Technologies
SAN DIEGO, August 6, 2002 - Silicon Wave, Inc., a world leading silicon developer and provider for Wireless Personal Area Networks, today announced the availability of BTW Bluetooth communication software from WIDCOMM, Inc. for its Dual-Mode mini-PCI Card Reference Design featuring Blue802™ Technology. Under the agreement Silicon Wave can now offer OEMs a complete Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 qualified hardware and software solution for integrating both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technologies into PCs and peripherals. Using Silicon Wave's Bluetooth chipsets, BTW is also available to PC OEMs who want to add only Bluetooth wireless functionality to their products.
BTW is WIDCOMM's complete communications software solution that enables Bluetooth wireless technology into PCs. It is fully compliant with Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 and supports multiple operating systems including Windows® 98SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Silicon Wave's dual-mode reference design features Blue802™Technology that allows simultaneous operation of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless functionality in PCs. This enables PC-based Bluetooth applications such as mouse, keyboard, printing, file transfer and portable device synchronization to run at the same time the PC user is connected to a network over Wi-Fi, and delivers virtually the same user experience as that found when operating over wired Ethernet and USB. The dual-mode reference design allows OEMs to quickly bring mini-PCI cards and other peripherals to market at a lower cost than implementing separate modules. The reference design allows both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios to share the same PCB, host interface and antennas, saving integration and material costs. Using Silicon Wave's Bluetooth qualified SiW1700™ series and Intersil's PRISM® 3 WLAN chipsets featuring direct conversion technology, the reference design is optimized for low cost and high performance.
"Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are complimentary wireless technologies and PC manufacturers are requesting a solution that supports the simultaneous operation of both," said Ron Wong, BTW product marketing director for WIDCOMM. "Silicon Wave and Intersil have delivered a design that adds the benefits of Bluetooth wireless functionality to Wi-Fi enabled PCs while permitting simultaneous and optimal operation of both wireless technologies at the lowest possible cost today."
"WIDCOMM is a leader in providing qualified Bluetooth communication software for Windows," said Janet Walther, product manager and marketing director for Silicon Wave. "This agreement delivers a fully-qualified, complete hardware and software bundle to our customers that allows them to easily integrate either Bluetooth or Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technologies into their PC products and peripherals."
"OEMs now have a turnkey solution for integrating Bluetooth and Wi-Fi into PCs and peripherals," said Tim Godfrey, strategic marketing manager for Intersil. "The addition of WIDCOMM's proven and robust BTW software to our reference design provides all the necessary ingredients for them to quickly bring products to market."
