Silicon Wave Working with Intel to Develop Coexistence Solution For Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Wireless Technology in Notebook PC Platforms
SANTA CLARA, CA; Intel Developer's Forum - September 9, 2002 - Silicon Wave, a leading supplier of silicon for Wireless Personal Area Networks, announced today they are working with Intel® Corporation to develop technology that enables the simultaneous operation of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b) wireless technologies in notebook PCs. Silicon Wave's Bluetooth implementation will be based on its SiW1700TM series chipset, which is Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 qualified.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are complementary wireless technologies that share the same 2.4GHz ISM band. When the two technologies operate at the same time, for example when Bluetooth applications are used while the user is connected to the network over Wi-Fi, interference may occur. The coexistence solution will ensure that end users experience optimal data throughput, range and responsiveness on wireless LANs while maintaining connectivity with other PCs or peripherals enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology such as keyboards, mice, printers, PDAs, cameras and Smart Phones.
"Silicon Wave continues to lead and innovate in delivering pragmatic solutions that answer PC users' demands for seamless and simultaneous operation of both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technologies," said Michael Yin, director of Bluetooth product marketing for Silicon Wave. "We are committed to providing real-world solutions for the interference issues in wireless PC platforms."
"This joint effort will deliver solutions that support the coexistence of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technologies," said Ticky Thakkar, director of platform architecture for Intel's Mobile Platform Group. "Our next generation wireless mobile computing platform will allow users to successfully use both technologies simultaneously."
Intel selected Silicon Wave to co-develop this coexistence technology because of its expertise in developing low-power, direct conversion Bluetooth radios, and its proven knowledge and commitment in overcoming the interference challenges often experienced when Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technologies are used simultaneously in the same device.
