QuickLogic Integrates Virage Logic Embedded Memory IP in Advanced Embedded Standard Products
Embedded Memory Enables QuickLogic to Offer Higher-Performance Embedded Standard Products Cost-Effectively
Fremont, CA - September 17, 2002, Virage Logic, Corp. (Nasdaq: VIRL), a global leader in embedded memory, today announced a multi-year agreement for QuickLogic to license its Area, Speed and Power (ASAP™) High-Speed (HS) embedded SRAM memory on Tower Semiconductor's 0.18-micron logic process. To be used with QuickLogic's Embedded Standard Products (ESP), the ASAP-HS embedded memory is expected to offer significant advancements in speed. With the ASAP-HS embedded memory, QuickLogic can take advantage of the industry's first commercially available embedded memory with speeds surpassing 600 MHz.
Targeting Internet routers, Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), access platform for wired and wireless communications systems, telecommunications switches and industrial control applications, QuickLogic's ESP products deliver a combination of guaranteed ASSP performance, ASIC design flow and FPGA flexibility. By leveraging Virage Logic's high-speed embedded SRAM memories, QuickLogic can now deliver higher performing and advanced design products.
"With its high-speed embedded memories being the fastest memories tested, Virage Logic was an obvious choice as speed becomes critical for our target markets," said Tim Saxe, vice president of engineering at QuickLogic. "Driven by not only high speed, but also by low power applications and time-to-market pressures, it was important to select a partner with embedded memory IP technology that is silicon-proven and cost effective."
"Our mainstream products to date have focused on delivering area-optimized, cost-effective embedded memories to our customers," said Krishna Balachandran, director of product marketing at Virage Logic. "However, with speed becoming very important for applications such as the Internet infrastructure, we architected the high-speed memories to meet the demands of next-generation products that require rapid data handling."
In order to achieve faster speeds, Virage Logic incorporated its Fast Loop Self-Timing technology. This technology enables a 2K x 16, single-port memory under worst-case conditions to operate at over 600MHz (1.8 ns). The ASAP-HS embedded memory meets the stringent speed demands of the communications and networking market for such applications as network processors and DSP technology.
The ASAP Product Line
The ASAP-HS embedded memory family is part of the ASAP product line that consists of two other embedded memories: high-density (HD) and ultra-low power (ULP). The ASAP-HD memories address the needs of many applications that are optimized for area such as HDTVs, set-top boxes, routers and home gateways. The ASAP ULP embedded memory targets portable applications that must consume less active and standby power such as many Bluetooth and 802.11b devices, as well as mobile applications such as cell phones, PDAs or laptops.
