Barco Silex announces VC-2 HQ RTP mapping ready for broadcast video production over IP
Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium – April 12, 2016 – Barco Silex, leading provider of video compression solution in the broadcast market, announces the availability of RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) mapping for VC-2 encoded video stream. This is an essential building block for the broadcast market moving away from SDI to IP based production flow and will further enable the adoption of the open VC-2 codec standard in this context.
The RTP encapsulation of the VC-2 code stream according to the IETF draft enables the transport of video in the same way as it is proposed for uncompressed stream in the VSF TR-03 recommendation. With the encapsulation of the VC-2 code stream into RTP packets, it becomes extremely easy to replace an uncompressed stream by its equivalent VC-2 encoded stream. The operation reduces the network bandwidth by a factor up to 4 times.
The VSF TR-03 recommendation defines how to carry the video/audio signals over a standard Ethernet infrastructure. The video transport is based on RTP and very flexible as each media essence is transmitted separately. Each video stream can then be encoded to reduce its bandwidth with an open standard codec such as VC-2 (SMPTE 2042).
The need for a codec with low compression ratio is driven today by the increasing image quality used in production, and the transition to IP-based infrastructure. The VC-2 standard is a lightweight video compression codec for low latency application. The VC-2 codec is the right option to reduce the video bandwidth while keeping the content visually lossless.
Barco Silex will demonstrate its latest technology and products, including its latest VC-2 FPGA/ASIC library and RTP streaming, during the NAB show in Las Vegas (booth C8530).
