Cambium Networks choses FlexSwitch IP for their PTP 700 platform
September 20, 2016 -- Packet Architects AB, a provider of FPGA/ASIC networking IP, today announced that Cambium Networks™, a leading global provider of wireless broadband solutions, chose their FlexSwitch Ethernet switch IP for the PTP 700 series of wireless backhaul products.
FlexSwitch is a very flexible, parameterized framework for creating packet switching IP cores. The IP used by Cambium Networks is derived from a base L2 Ethernet switch. This base L2 switch is configured with parameters such as port speed, number of ports, L2 MAC table size, buffer memory size and more, to get an optimal configuration for Cambium Networks. On top of the standard features of the base L2 switch a number of Cambium Networks-specific features were added. These features were described in the PAC high-level language and synthesized to optimal RTL using the Packet Architects high-level synthesis flow.
“FlexSwitch IP was chosen after a survey of available IPs because it could easily be customized to meet our requirements within the FPGA available area. Packet Architects were able to provide a custom IP within a matter of weeks that matched our immediate prototyping needs The full set of requirements were developed and delivered in a timely manner and during the whole process Packet Architects have been very responsive in supporting us. We are happy that we have chosen this IP for our PTP 700 series of products as it will give us a future-proof solution that we can easily adapt as our requirements evolve.” said Nigel King, Cambium Networks CTO.
According to Robert Wikander, CTO for Packet Architects, “Being able to quickly deliver customized solutions is why we initially decided to make the effort to develop a toolchain rather than a set of fixed IP cores. Now with the toolchain in place we can swiftly develop core that exactly matches our customer’s needs”.

About Packet Architects
Packet Architects develops Switching and Routing IPs for Ethernet, IPv4/IPv6 and other packet processing technologies. Ethernet is ubiquitous in today’s communication systems, yet there’re very few IP’s available beyond MAC level. This is due to the need for high flexibility at switching/routing level which makes the use of fixed IP’s difficult.
With Packet Architects unique FlexSwitch technology it is possible to get an IP that exactly matches the performance/cost point targeted. Not only are parameters such as port count and bandwidth easily changed, it is also possible to change and extend the protocol processing with very limited development effort.
