Silicon Wave Bluetooth Radio Modem Qualified by Qualcomm for Use with MSM Chipsets
SiW1702™ Radio Modem Accelerates Integration of Bluetooth Wireless Technology into Mobile Phones
SAN DIEGO, CA -- October 7, 2002 -- Silicon Wave, a leading supplier of integrated circuits for Wireless Personal Area Networks, today announced that Qualcomm has qualified Silicon Wave's SiW1702™ Radio Modem for use with Qualcomm CDMA Technologies' Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets with an integrated Bluetooth baseband. Qualcomm's MSM CDMA chipset licensees will now be able to quickly, easily and inexpensively integrate Bluetooth™ wireless functions into their mobile phones by adding the SiW1702 Radio Modem.
Optimized for mobile phone applications, the SiW1702 is a direct conversion radio modem offering ultra-low power consumption and small footprint. It provides superior RF performance necessary for mobile phone applications over an extended temperature range (-40 to +85 degrees Celsius) with the repeatability required for a high volume product. The radio modem's Qualcomm proprietary interface simplifies integration with any of Qualcomm's Bluetooth-enabled MSM chips. It also meets the latest version of Qualcomm's stringent radio performance requirements, accelerating time to market for mobile phones with integrated Bluetooth wireless technology.
"Silicon Wave's SiW1702 radio modem addresses the two critical requirements for successful mobile phone application -- long battery life and superior radio performance," said Jarvis Tou, vice president of marketing and product management for Silicon Wave. "Qualcomm's qualification of our radio modem is another example of our commitment to delivering Bluetooth products optimized for the cellular handset market segment."
The integration of Bluetooth wireless technology into mobile phones will help accelerate the use of wireless data through CDMA networks, increasing the ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) for wireless operators. Using a Bluetooth connection, notebook PC and PDA users can access rich Internet and email content when they are away from their ethernet network connection. Additionally, handsets enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology will allow for hands-free wireless headset applications.
"The combination of the SiW1702 Radio Modem with the MSM chipset is a tremendous advantage to Qualcomm handset licensees," said Steve Brown, vice president of worldwide sales and applications engineering for Silicon Wave. "Customers will now be able to affordably add Bluetooth wireless technology to their CDMA phones with a solution that was designed for their specific needs."
Available in a 7x7 mm 48-pin MLF package or as a 4x4 mm Known Good Die, the SiW1702 Radio Modem is currently in volume production.
The SiW1702 Radio Modem is a member of Silicon Wave's second generation of highly integrated, low-power radio modems and baseband processors. Designed for maximum flexibility, the second-generation products are optimized for integration into mobile phones, printers, PDAs, notebook and desktop PCs and accessories. All components are Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 compliant.
