Intrinsic ID and Technolution Awarded SBIR to Develop SEMIO IoT Security Platform
SUNNYVALE, Calif., United States and GOUDA, The Netherlands, March 6, 2018 – Intrinsic ID, the world’s leading provider of digital authentication technology for Internet of Things security and embedded applications, and technology integrator Technolution announced today they have received a Small Business Innovation Research Programme (SBIR) award to jointly develop security technology for the Internet of Things. Awarded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, the grant will support development of SEMIO – SEcurity Manager for the Internet Of Things – a cloud-based IoT security platform based on Intrinsic ID’s technology for developing unclonable device identities.
IoT Security: Lack of Confidence, Lack of Encryption
As the presence of the Internet of Things expands – some forecasts expect as many as 50 billion IoT devices could be connected by 2020 – trust in its security appears to be lagging. A 2017 survey of more than 10 thousand consumers found that 9 in 10 respondents were concerned about IoT security. As much as 70 percent of IoT devices do not utilize encryption.
“IoT security depends on being able to authenticate every device, and that requires every device to have its own unique, unclonable identity,” said Pim Tuyls, Intrinsic ID’s chief executive officer Pim Tuyls. Intrinsic ID’s patented SRAM Physical Unclonable Function, or SRAM PUF, technology enables the creation of unclonable identities based on the unique variations inherent in the physical composition of semiconductors, such as the microprocessors used in IoT devices. Intrinsic ID uses the SRAM PUF-based technology to generate a secure key for each individual device. “The PUF technology makes it possible to identify individual IoT devices on the basis of the unique identity of their microprocessors.”
“Proper security is the greatest challenge that IoT service suppliers face,” said Serge de Vos, chief technology officer of Technolution. “SEMIO will offer a complete security solution utilizing unique IoT device identities, as well as the convenience of Security as a Service (SECaaS).” Building on its extensive experience in integrating electronics and software within large-scale systems, Technolution will develop a platform that offers secure services for connecting IoT devices to their back-office systems.
SEMIO Security Platform
SEMIO adds security features and functionality to an IoT device, and functions as a bridge among hardware, software services and the end user. This makes it much simpler for service suppliers to apply secure communication, authentication, key management, initial commissioning and secure start-up, and thus to secure critical infrastructure. Should the security need to be changed, for instance to close a leak or to deploy new encryption technology, the system offers a secure way to implement updates. The solution is compatible with existing cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft’s Azure.
Award for Development Granted
The award granted to the two companies is SBIR Cyber Security Tender III. The Small Business Innovation Research Programme aims to stimulate entrepreneurs within the European Union to put forward innovative solutions addressing Dutch social issues. SBIR has been set up as a competition among businesses, with the best offers awarded a feasibility study. Those companies with the most promising studies are asked to further develop their products. Based on results of their feasibility study, Intrinsic ID and Technolution received the grant for the development of SEMIO.
