Tality HomePNA 2.0 IP Enables High Speed Home Networking With No New Wires
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 2002--Tality Corp. today announced the availability of a HomePNA Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio that provides consumer electronics companies with a cost effective approach for developing custom HomePNA 2.0 solutions. Tality's portfolio provides the key building blocks necessary to rapidly develop and introduce highly differentiated HomePNA products.
The HomePNA IP portfolio includes Tality's popular 10/100 Enhanced Ethernet MAC, a DSP-based PHY, link management software and the architecture for an integrated analog front end (AFE). Tality's IP is designed to interface directly to an external Analog Devices AD9876 mixed signal front end (MxFE), but can also be rapidly customized to interface with other AFEs. Customers can choose to license the components for in-house developments or have Tality embed the solution in a customized System-on-Chip. The solution is also suitable for a standalone MAC/PHY development.
"Tality's HomePNA IP represents a breakthrough solution for companies challenged with implementing the HPNA 2.0 standard," said Peter Hutton, group director for Tality's Digital IC Solutions group. "Opting for an off the shelf solution frequently means compromising. Our IP makes developing a custom solution viable, enabling companies to deliver the feature set and cost that will best serve their target market."
Video-on-demand, streaming video and audio, and head-to-head gaming represent some of the home entertainment applications driving the need for high-speed home connectivity. The HPNA 2.0 standard's high speed (10 Mbps throughput) and ease of use (connections use ordinary phone lines and existing phone outlets) enables consumers to enjoy multi-player games, share printers and peripherals and to hook up multiple PCs and other devices to a single broadband Internet connection whilst maintaining the QoS (quality of service) necessary for services such as video, audio and voice running on the same phone line.
Tality has a wealth of experience in wired and wireless networking and is one of the largest suppliers of communication IP. The HomePNA IP solution is complementary to other communications IP solutions that Tality has developed -- including Ethernet, Bluetooth and 802.11 -- for the fast-growing home networking market. Tality's future developments for home networking include Powerline (HomePlug) and Ethernet First Mile (EFM).
