Comsys advances GPRS/Edge technology with new IP solution
Will Demo Software Handset Technology at Telecom Asia Show
ITU Telecom Asia Show - Hong Kong, China - 2 December 2002: Comsys Communications & Signal Processing Ltd., a leader in physical layer solutions for emerging cellular standards, announced today that it has successfully developed a DSP-based GPRS/EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) physical layer for handsets and base stations integrated with RF platforms. Comsys will demonstrate its integrated GPRS/EDGE software solution for handsets at booth #1342, 2-7 December 2002, in Hong Kong.
By offering a complete solution comprising integrated software and system design for both the DSP and microcontroller, Comsys reduces the time and resources needed to complete a GSM/GPRS/EDGE base-band silicon chip. The Comsys solution imparts an advantage for semiconductor and OEM mobile phone handset manufacturers as they seek to control cost of ownership and development for their new products. Comsys' solution for GSM/GPRS and for EDGE, are physical layer software solutions that optimize data traffic over GPRS and EDGE cellular networks.
For its demonstration in Hong Kong, Comsys is combining different sets of emulators, both handset and base station, with a series of RF (radio frequency) boards to provide a working GPRS/EDGE model. The demo highlights the complete system solution that Comsys offers to show the fast data transmission required by next generation handsets.
At the core of Comsys' solution are DSP-based algorithms integrating a handset's digital, analog, and physical layer characteristics in a powerful yet efficient software code to enable maximum resource utilization. This software-based solution yields increased functionality and superior flexibility per application so that packets of data can be pushed faster through the handset thereby enhancing the end-users total experience. In addition, with a software core, updating the handset is easy.
"EDGE is here today and here to stay. We continue to see migration to EDGE technology, and not only in North America. More and more network operators in Asia and Europe are also choosing EDGE," remarked Ronny Gorlicki, Comsys Executive VP of Sales & Marketing. "Delays in 3G have caused a gap between present-day GPRS and next-generation UMTS, EDGE technology bridges this gap. We see many new entrants looking for a GPRS/EDGE solution, and Comsys gives just that - a comprehensive and integrated base-band solution."
Today, Comsys is already offering EDGEware™, a baseband physical layer software solution incorporating the latest wireless data transmission EDGE standard. EDGEware™ offers fast and easy migration from GSM/GPRS to EDGE while reducing the costs of integration and shortening time to market. Comsys' solution outperforms EDGE standard requirements as specified in the ETSI GSM by implementing a state-of-the-art equalizer and patented high-efficiency innovative algorithms. EDGEware™ is also highly tunable to different system aspects such as different RF impairments and protocol stack interfaces.
