Altera Expands Stratix Device Family with New Package Offerings
Extension of FineLine BGA Packages Driven by Strong Customer Demand
San Jose, Calif., February 10, 2003--Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today announced the addition of new packaging options for the Stratix™ EP1S40 and EP1S80 devices, offering system developers more flexibility in their designs, enabling vertical migration among devices utilizing either of the two packages. The Stratix EP1S80 device will be available in the 33 x 33 mm, 1,020-pin FineLine BGA® package, and the Stratix EP1S40 device will be available in the 29 x 29 mm, 780-pin FineLine BGA package. Both devices are currently supported in the Quartus® II version 2.2, service pack 1, design software.
"The strong demand for Stratix FPGAs has prompted Altera to offer additional packaging options, allowing designers to migrate further within the Stratix device family without necessitating a re-spin of their printed circuit board," said Steve Mensor, senior director of new product marketing at Altera. "Our vertical migration strategy offers design teams the flexibility of choosing the best device for their application, and gives customers the ability to offer increased functionality in their next-generation products by moving to a larger Stratix device without requiring a board spin."
The EP1S40 and the EP1S80 devices will be available in the thermally-enhanced flip-chip F780 and F1020 pin packages, respectively. The EP1S40 device will be offered in -5, -6 and -7 speed grades, while the EP1S80 device will be available in -6 and -7 speed grades. The F780 package supports vertical migration between the EP1S10 device up to and including the EP1S40 device. The F1020 package supports vertical migration between the EP1S25 device up to and including the EP1S80 device. The midsize EP1S40 device, with 41,250 logic elements (LEs), features 3.2 Mbits of TriMatrix™ memory and 14 digital signal processing (DSP) blocks. The EP1S80 device, with 79,040 LEs, offers 7.2 Mbits of TriMatrix memory and 22 DSP blocks.
Device Availability and Pricing
Production versions of the EP1S40 F780 and EP1S80 F1020 devices are expected to be available in April 2003. The EP1S40 device in the F780 package will be priced starting at $300 for quantities of 10,000 units in the late-2003 timeframe. The EP1S80 device in the F1020 package will be priced starting at $750 for quantities of 5,000 units in the late-2003 timeframe.
