Xilinx and Cook Technologies announce Serial Digital Video (SDV) board
New board demonstrates dramatic cost reduction of serial digital video channels
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 4, 2003 - Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX), the industry leader in programmable logic solutions, and Cook Technologies of Salt Lake City, UT., today announced a new Serial Digital Video (SDV) board for demonstrating and testing high-bandwidth video communications channels. Based on the industry-leading Xilinx Virtex-II Pro Platform FPGAs, the CTXIL103 board enables video system designers to easily implement high-speed serial interfaces with popular industry standards such as HD-SDI (SMPTE292M), SDI (SMPTE259M) and DVB-ASI. Integrating the encoders and decoders for these standards into the FPGA enables the use of much lower cost cable drivers and equalizers, significantly reducing the overall bill of materials required for each video channel. For additional information visit www.cook-tech.com/products.The design running on the Cook Technologies' SDV board also leaves plenty of space in the XC2VP4 Virtex-II Pro FPGA to develop additional video applications. In addition to a demonstration platform for HD-SDI, SDI, and DVB-ASI, and various clock source designs, designers can implement a significant amount of video DSP in the unused 80 percent of the Xilinx Virtex-II Pro device. Much of the DSP can operate at 4X the inherent HDTV rate of 74.25 MHz.
"Cook Technologies is proud to demonstrate the powerful capability of advanced Xilinx FPGAs for the transmission of video data," said Colin Cook, president of Cook Technologies. "By working with Xilinx, Cook Technologies can offer this platform to video customers who want to test the product in their own labs."
Using the industry's fastest Virtex-II Pro FPGA logic, with embedded multipliers, dual port block RAM, digital clock managers, XCITE digitally controlled impedance technology, RocketIO serial transceivers, and embedded PowerPC processors, it is possible to implement many video and imaging applications including color space conversion, picture scaling, image enhancement and MPEG algorithms, as well as bridging to other backplane or communications protocols.
"The SDV board is yet another exciting example of how Xilinx provides customers with real, cost-effective solutions," said Robert Bielby, senior director of Strategic Solutions Marketing at Xilinx. "This new Virtex-II Pro FPGA board demonstrates how engineers can easily implement advanced video networking protocols and simultaneously greatly reduce system costs. While supporting the industry standards, an FPGA-based solution provides greater flexibility, scalability for additional customization, and much faster time-to-market."
