Winbond Electronics Licenses MOSAID Patent Portfolio
MOSAID's 8th license sets two precedents: first Taiwanese licensee and first running royalty rate agreement
OTTAWA, Ontario - April 25, 2003 - MOSAID Technologies Incorporated (TSE:MSD) today announced that it has signed a 5-year, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty bearing patent licensing agreement with Winbond Electronics Corporation. Winbond is based in Taiwan and is recognized as one of the leading suppliers of DRAM products in the world. The agreement grants Winbond a license to use MOSAID's patents in all DRAM products which are sold under its brand name worldwide.
"This agreement is an important achievement for MOSAID since Winbond Electronics is our first running royalty term licensee, as well as the first Taiwanese company to license our patents. Taiwanese manufacturers are rapidly becoming leading suppliers of semiconductor products in the global DRAM market, accounting for 14.3% in 2002 compared to 8.4% in 2001 according to Dataquest," said George Cwynar, President and Chief Executive Officer for MOSAID. "This announcement further affirms the value of our patent portfolio as well as the strength of our licensing program."
MOSAID believes all companies that manufacture mainstream DRAM products, including single and double data rate (DDR) synchronous DRAM, as well as Rambus® DRAM, use its patented circuit technology. MOSAID has also found its patented circuit technology incorporated in the embedded DRAM products of a number of major semiconductor manufacturers.
To date, MOSAID has signed eight patent licensing agreements with many leading semiconductor manufacturers including Fujitsu, NEC, Toshiba, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, Oki Electric, Matsushita Electric and Winbond Electronics. MOSAID's ability to broaden its licensing opportunities is supported by its growing portfolio of 486 patents issued and pending. There are currently a total of 12 semiconductor manufacturers on notice for patent infringement and MOSAID is engaged in licensing discussions with several of these companies.
