New MIPS-based Family of Embedded Processors from QuickLogic Expands QuickMIPS FPGA-Enabled Product Offering
Performance, functionality and cost advantages of standard products available with the flexibility of programmable logic
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 13, 2003 -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS, MIPSB), a leading provider of processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, today announced that QuickLogic Corporation, a licensee of its MIPS32™ 4Kc™ core, released three additions to its QuickMIPS™ product family. QuickLogic, the pioneer of ESPs (embedded standard products), has targeted these new embedded processors for communications, storage area networks, and industrial control applications. Key metrics of success in these markets -- quick time-to-market, system-performance, and low-cost -- are addressed by QuickMIPS processors because they enable affordable system customization and performance enhancements.
QuickMIPS combines the processing power of the MIPS32 4Kc core with fully characterized, application-specific functionality, and field programmability on a single device. Based on QuickLogic's patented Vialink metal-to-metal technology, the programmable portion of the device employs highly reliable links to execute connections inside an array. By enabling parallel hardware, software and system development, QuickMIPS provides all the benefits of a single-chip solution increased performance, reduced power consumption and simplicity of design at prices that are comparable to discrete embedded processor plus FPGA implementations.

The QuickMIPS devices (QL902, QL903, QL904) feature a 32-bit, 233 MHz MIPS® CPU core that enables customers to select from a broad range of off-the-shelf software; and a flexible memory controller that supports a variety of external SDRAM, ROM and Flash configurations. A 32-bit PCI v2.2 compatible interface is also included, supporting data rates of up to 66 MHz. Similarly, two 10/100 Ethernet ports increase overall system throughput and provide direct connectivity (through the media independent interface) to a range of networking technologies. For lowest cost applications the QL904 subsets the functionality with only one Ethernet interface and no PCI interface.
