Sharp Develops Wireless Handset Featuring Nazomi's Hardware Acceleration Technology for Java Software: Provides Consumers an Enhanced Experience for Rich Multimedia Applications
Wireless camera phone accelerates processing of Java software due to integration of Nazomi's JSTAR™ coprocessor technology
SAN JOSE, Calif.- June 24th, 2003 - Nazomi Communications, Inc. today announced a significant technology integration milestone that results in a new era of wireless handsets manufactured by Sharp Corporation. Nazomi's JSTAR coprocessor technology for the Java platform has been incorporated into Sharp's Spring Model 2003 wireless camera phones that provide users with increased handset performance while at the same time providing greater application performance.
The wireless camera phone, now shipping throughout Japan, has unique value-added capabilities as the Java software processing function has been migrated to Java hardware processing. Sharp accomplished this by working with Nazomi to integrate Nazomi's JSTAR coprocessor into its wireless handset. This technology brings users optimal functionality of Java applications that are run by the handset.
Koji Yamashita, department general manager of Sharp's Personal Communication Systems Division 2, commented, "We appreciate Nazomi's innovative technology. Nazomi's acceleration technology for the Java platform has given us a very unique solution for our line up of advanced Java and multimedia mobile phones."
"We are honored by Sharp's decision to integrate Nazomi's JSTAR technology. To be a part of this high-end camera handset clearly indicates that our technology provides outstanding capabilities and meets the requirements of world-class electronics companies, and in particular, those that are producing wireless handsets with Java software capabilities," said Mukesh Patel, president and CEO of Nazomi. "We are very excited that our technology significantly contributes to the high-performance functionality of the applications in this device. Sharp's adoption of JSTAR also shows that Nazomi and its hardware-based acceleration of Java software are gaining recognition and success in the international marketplace."
About Nazomi's JSTAR
The JSTAR patented acceleration technology for the Java platform, is a transparent intellectual property coprocessor solution that boosts the speed at which Java software executes by 10X to 40X. Provided as synthesizable RTL, the processor is easily integrated with any microprocessor or system on chip (SoC). Its design does not require additional pins, which means that a JSTAR-enhanced chip can be a drop-in replacement. Additional benefits are that existing legacy software runs as-is without modification and all legacy development tools can be used.
