MIPS Technologies Licenses Fodus Communications The MIPS32 4Kc Core for Wireless Router Applications
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and TAIPEI, Taiwan, October 6, 2003 -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS, MIPSB), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, today announced that Fodus, a leading provider of ICs for wireless LAN applications, has licensed the MIPS32(TM) 4Kc(TM) processor core to develop next-generation SOCs for the global networking marketplace.
Fodus' total solution for wireless chipsets enables high-speed connections to networks based on IEEE 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g standards. The chipsets operate seamlessly in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands and deliver speeds of up to 54Mbps. Fodus will use its 4Kc core license to develop SOCs for wireless routers, incorporating 802.11b/a/g wireless LAN access points, Ethernet switching routers and firewall and VPN functions into one chip. This product will provide customers with an integrated and cost-effective solution for SOHO wireless devices.
"MIPS Technologies' highly scalable architecture gives our company the flexibility to upgrade future designs with minimal development effort," said Jeff Jen, president and CEO of Fodus. "Furthermore, MIPS Technologies'roadmap of high performance processors will help maintain Fodus' technology leadership. We look forward to continuing our close partnership with MIPS Technologies to develop high performance SOCs in the future."
"The high performance characteristics of the industry-standard MIPS architecture are ideal for a broad range of applications that demand high levels of integration, media processing and data bandwidth," said Jack Browne, vice president of worldwide sales at MIPS Technologies. "With their 4Kc core license, Fodus Communications joins other widely recognized MIPS customers that are leveraging the high performance MIPS architecture to develop leading-edge solutions for the networking market. We applaud their leadership and look forward to their continued success."
