SANYO Licenses Java-Enabled ARM Microprocessor Core for Portable Appliances; First ARM Partner in Japan to License ARM926EJ-S Core
CAMBRIDGE, England and TOKYO, May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- ARM (LSE: ARM; Nasdaq: ARMHY), the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC processor solutions, and SANYO, today announced that SANYO has licensed the ARM926EJ-S(TM) microprocessor core for use in portable appliances such as digital cameras, PDAs and digital audio applications. SANYO is the first ARM Partner in Japan to license the ARM® Jazelle(TM) technology- enabled microprocessor. This license will enable SANYO to reinforce its presence in the embedded market and to extend its intellectual property (IP) offering, which includes the previously licensed ARM7TDMI® core and ARM7TDMI-S(TM) core.
The ARM926EJ-S soft macrocell is a fully synthesizable, high-performance 32-bit RISC processor comprising the Jazelle technology-enhanced processor core, instruction and data caches, tightly coupled memory (TCM) interfaces, memory management unit (MMU), and separate instruction and data AMBA(TM) bus-based AHB (Advanced High-performance Bus) interfaces.
``The rapid growth in the development of the Internet has resulted in strong interest in SANYO's Java-compatible microprocessors,'' said Toru Akiyama, Division general manager, SANYO Semiconductor Company's System LSI Division. ``We anticipate that integrating the Java-compatible ARM9(TM) family core technology will serve as a springboard for new business growth in SANYO's micro-controller business.''
``ARM's Jazelle technology provides companies like SANYO, a leader in multimedia and mobile communications, with an unparalleled combination of Java performance with minimal costs and power consumption,'' said Reynette Au, VP, Corporate Marketing, ARM. ``SANYO's decision to incorporate the Jazelle technology-based ARM926EJ-S core into their next-generation portable appliances will enable them to quickly and efficiently develop leading-edge products for a wide range of consumer electronic applications.''
The ARM926EJ-S core is one of the first Jazelle technology-enabled CPUs introduced by ARM. Jazelle technology delivers an unparalleled combination of Java technology performance and the world's leading 32-bit embedded RISC architecture, giving platform developers the freedom to run Java technology- based applications alongside established OS, middleware and application code on a single processor. This single-processor solution offers higher performance, lower system cost and lower power than coprocessors and dual- processor Java technology-based solutions.
SANYO will offer advanced SoC devices using ARM926EJ-S in Q2 2002.
