Infineon Introduces the World's First Multimedia Phone Platform Supporting UMTS, EDGE and GPRS Using an ARM9 based modem; Announces Asian Customer Designs
Infineon also announced that leading Asian handset manufacturer DBTel and network equipment supplier Huawei Technologies have selected Infineon’s new platform for next-generation handsets. Mobile phones equipped with Infineon’s platform are expected to be commercially available starting at the end of 2004.
Infineon’s multimedia platform includes all hardware and software components required for high-performance multimedia phones. Mobile phone manufacturers benefit from reduced development times, fast time-to-market and better adaptability to design trends as the basic hardware and software components of the platform remain the same, independent of the cellular standard. The multimedia platform comes complete with protocol stack and application framework.
APOXI® (Application Programming Object-Oriented Extendable Interface) application framework facilitates the reuse of applications over several product generations. It provides an open application protocol interface (API) thus enabling easy integration of third party applications, such as WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) browsers and MMI (Man Machine Interfaces). Major applications such as WAP, MMS, Java, Voice Recognition, Email and SyncML are available through an extensive partner network.
At the 3GSM 2004 show in Cannes, France (February 23-26, 2004) in Hall 1, Booth #A19, Infineon demonstrates the capability of its multimedia platform to handle UMTS, EDGE and GPRS networks as well as assisted GPS (A-GPS) making possible location-based services.
Reference Customer
DBTel, a leading handset brand in China and Taiwan, selected Infineon’s multimedia phone MP1 platform to develop their next generation of multimedia handsets. “Infineon's multimedia platform enables us to quickly develop and introduce a variety of models all based on the same core architecture. This dramatically reduces our development investments and significantly shortens time to market for each product,” says Michael Mou, Chairman and founder of DBTel.
Technical Information on the Multimedia Platform
The multimedia platform reference design features an ARM9 based modem and is based on the Infineon S-GOLD™ family with integrated Java Accelerator. Enhanced multimedia options include additional features, such as video recording and video playback (MP4), camera support of up to 2 Megapixels, video streaming and support of high definition displays. The multimedia platform offers several upgrade possibilities allowing mobile manufacturers to design phones tailored to different market segments. The basic software and hardware platform does not change when adding options.
The UMTS solution is 3GPP Rel99 compliant and features packet switched data speed of 384 kbit/s in up- and downlink. The UMTS option features Infineon’s UMTS RF transceiver, called SMARTi®U, which is the world’s first single-chip RF transceiver. The platform is further enabled by SPINNER W-CDMA baseband processor of Zyray Wireless.
EDGE can be configured as standalone solution or in conjunction with UMTS and is available as class 10, MCS 1 to 9 providing data speed of up to 384 kbit/s in packet switched mode.
The A-GPS option enhances the multimedia platform with network-assisted Global Positioning Service. It provides true indoor capability for global localizations as well as rapid times to first fix (TTFF) of location. The multimedia platform integrates IndoorGPS chipset of Global Locate, consisting of GL-20000 and GL-LN-22. This chipset supports mobile station based, mobile station assisted and autonomous functionality and meets the A-GPS performance requirements for 3GPP.
