Accelerated Technology Adds Ethernet Over USB Support to Allow Low Cost Networking Using USB
MOBILE, Ala., May 12, 2004 - Accelerated Technology®, the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq: MENT), today announced a new class driver for the Nucleus® USB software, which provides Ethernet over USB support for the Nucleus Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). This new Nucleus USB Ethernet communication class driver further extends the Nucleus USB product line allowing developers to focus on adding value to their USB applications rather than writing driver software.
The Nucleus USB Ethernet communication class driver has been released for use with the Nucleus USB function (peripheral device) stack, which is both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 compliant. The new class driver enables a USB-attached peripheral to offer Ethernet-like networking over USB with low cost, high performance and plug-and-play advantages.
The Nucleus USB Ethernet communication class driver is compliant with two USB class driver standards, Communication Device Class (CDC) Ethernet and remote Network Driver Interface Specification (RNDIS), for Ethernet over USB. The CDC Ethernet class is issued by the USB forum to support USB-enabled networking devices that use or communicate with non-Microsoft operating systems. The RNDIS class is officially supported by Microsoft to allow standard, in-the-box network support for network adapters on external plug-and-play buses such as USB and InfiniBand.
Typical applications using the Nucleus USB Ethernet communication class driver include a USB network modem, set-top box, residential gateway, Ethernet-to-USB converter/adapter and other communication devices using USB to convey network traffic to the host.
Availability and Pricing
The Nucleus embedded software is licensed with source code and without royalty fees. Available now, licenses for the Nucleus USB software start at U.S. $14,995 and licenses for the class drivers begin at U.S. $2,995.
