Xilinx Delivers The Industry's Fastest High-Speed Serial Tranceivers
Announcing production qualification of Virtex-II Pro X FPGAs
SAN JOSE, Calif., July 19, 2004 - Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) today announced production qualification for its industry-leading Virtex-II Pro X FPGAs. The production qualification using UMC's (NYSE: UMC) 0.13-micron process on 300mm wafers has been achieved on schedule and ahead of all competing solutions, making Virtex-II Pro X devices the industry's first FPGAs with production-quality transceivers at speeds above 3.7 Gbps.
"Several years ago Xilinx embarked upon a strategy to allow customers to achieve new levels of bandwidth and connectivity with our FPGAs," said Erich Goetting, vice president and general manager of the Advanced Products Division at Xilinx. "Production qualification of the Virtex-II Pro X devices re-affirms our leadership in delivering leading-edge products for high-speed serial."
"White Rock Networks chose the Virtex-II Pro X because of its unique ability to solve our high-speed I/O needs," said Greg Lowe, founder and CTO of White Rock, a provider of next-generation optical transport systems for metro networks. "Given the fast progression of this technology from leading-edge to volume production, we continue to be pleased with our choice."
Utilizing its latest RocketIO technology to achieve up to 10.3125 Gbps serial data rates, Virtex-II Pro X FPGAs are the functionally compatible extension of the highly successful Virtex-II Pro family. With the combination of Virtex-II Pro and Virtex-II Pro X FPGAs, Xilinx provides the industry's first solution supporting any speed between 622 Mbps and 10.3125 Gbps. As the industry continues to turn to high-speed serial solutions for an increasing number of applications, many industry leaders are moving from 2.5 Gbps and 3.125 Gbps connections to 5 Gbps and 6.25 Gbps connections. With today's announcement, Xilinx now offers customers a high-volume, production-released solution for those applications, with production-released device support for applications up to 10.3125 Gbps to follow. "UMC and Xilinx have had a long successful history in delivering their market-leading FPGA products based on our advanced process technologies," said Fu Tai Liou, head of the American Business Group at UMC. "As the primary foundry partner for Xilinx, we are pleased that our companies' collaborative efforts have again paid off with the introduction of their newest family of Virtex-II Pro X devices."
About Xilinx Virtex-II Pro X FPGAs
Xilinx Virtex-II Pro X FPGAs incorporate up to 20 RocketIO multi-gigabit transceivers, supporting operating ranges of 2.488 Gbps to 10.3125 Gbps per channel. Virtex-II Pro X FPGAs are the first programmable ICs that can directly drive optical transceiver OC-48 SONET compliant systems and support SONET implementation for OC-192 data rates and above. Virtex-II Pro X FPGAs also enable new applications, which require multiple high-speed serial channels each running in speeds up to 10.3125 Gbps, including popular bandwidth nodes such as 4.25 Gbps, 5 Gbps, and 6 Gbps. The 10 Gbps transceivers, when used in multiples, support effective bandwidths through the FPGA of more than 200 Gbps.
