Wipro Technologies adds QoS to its Wireless LAN IP portfolio
July 26, 2004 - Wipro Technologies, the global IT services division of Wipro Limited (NYSE:WIT), today announced the launch of its QoS (Quality of Services) enabled next generation IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/i intellectual property (IP) core. The QoS solution from Wipro complies with IEEE 802.11e EDCA (Enhanced Distributed Channel Access) mechanism as well as Wireless Multimedia Enhancements (WME) specification from WiFi. With this release, Wipro Technologies joins the ranks of a selected few companies having QoS enabled Wireless LAN IP. Wipro is demonstrating its QoS enabled Wireless LAN IP solution on its FPGA based FireFly™ platform in the EDA&T Conference Taiwan, between July 28 and 29, 2004.
Quality of Service (QoS) refers to the capability of a network to provide better service to selected network traffic. In basic Wireless LAN the performance for all types of data access degrades uniformly when the network gets overloaded. The primary goal of QoS is to provide priority including dedicated bandwidth, queue management and latency (required by some real-time and interactive traffic), and help alleviate congestion problems in the network
“With the growth of flat screens and HDTV, wireless multimedia networking at home and SOHO space is soon becoming a reality. Wipro’s QoS enabled Wireless LAN solutions will assist its customers to penetrate into this growing, high-end Wireless entertainment and networking domain. ” said Ramesh Emani, President of Embedded and Product Engineering Solutions, Wipro Technologies.
Wipro has developed vast expertise in the standards-based silicon intellectual property domain, a fact underlined by several IPs that span technologies including WLAN, IEEE 1394, USB and Ethernet. These IPs complement Wipro’s embedded and product engineering services across domains like consumer electronics, semiconductors, mobile devices and industrial automation. Wipro’s comprehensive Wireless LAN IP portfolio comprises of IPs for the IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g Baseband and the IEEE 802.11 a/b/g multimode MAC, supporting Security (IEEE 802.11i and WPA) and QOS.
