Industry-Standard MIPS Architecture Adopted by NEC Electronics for Enhanced Single-Chip Solution
For more than a decade, NEC has been a leading proponent of the industry-standard MIPS architecture and has developed innovative, award-winning solutions around both the MIPS32 and MIPS64® architectures, such as the 64-bit VR Series that includes fourteen family members with countless design wins. Today, NEC Electronics' MIPS-Based single-chip offerings are shipping to market in a wide range of digital consumer products, such as PVRs and DVD/HDD combination recorders.
The µPD61175 series offers an MPEG A/V decompression engine, graphics bit BLT/ display engine, stream processing engine and other peripherals on a single chip LSI. Together with a unified memory bus design, the chips enhance the consumer experience by delivering MPEG content to audio and video applications.
"Next-generation applications in the digital entertainment market will undoubtedly require more functionality and more performance on a chip," stated Shigeo Niitsu, vice president, 2nd System Operations Unit, NEC Electronics Corporation. "We are confident that our MIPS-Based single-chip solutions will continue to offer a superior solution platform in the DVD recorder market."
"NEC Electronics' MIPS-Based single-chip solutions already have been validated by multiple design wins in the digital consumer space," said Jack Browne, vice president of worldwide sales at MIPS Technologies. "With these new licenses for cores from our 4KE family, NEC Electronics' customers will continue to benefit from advanced performance and application optimization."
About the MIPS32 4KE Family
The 4KE family of processor cores offers up to 233 MHz and as low as 0.20 mW/MHz in a 0.13 micron process with a typical performance of 356 Dhrystone MIPS. Features such as code compression, large writeback cache memories and power-saving techniques give SOC designers the flexibility to optimize their applications by maximizing performance or minimizing power consumption. The 4KE cores are an ideal solution for a wide range of cutting-edge applications, from battery-operated mobile devices to performance hungry broadband networking products.
