Next Generation Mobile Video from Hantro
Hantro’s next generation hardware accelerated video decoder is the first in a family of multi-format codecs specifically tailored for mobile System-on-Chip designs. A single solution for 3GPP, DVB-H and DMB based mobile video applications, the decoder enables up to D1 resolution H.264, MPEG4 and H.263 video.
ARM Developers Conference, Santa Clara CA - 19th October, 2004 -- Leading the development of mobile video, Hantro's new 6150 hardware decoder is capable of decoding MPEG4 Simple Profile, H.263 Profile 0 and H.264 Baseline video in a single solution. Fully optimised, the 6150 decoder provides an extremely cost effective solution with low silicon area. >Lending itself perfectly for applications like video streaming and Mobile TV, the 6150 decoder can be licensed individually or integrated as part of Hantro’s Multimedia Engine.
“MPEG4 and H.263 are the default standards for mobile video because the encoding and decoding is extremely processing efficient, which is significant in a mobile environment where battery life is one of the most critical design criteria.” Says Eero Kaikkonen, President and CEO of Hantro “The H.264 standard adds a new dimension as it provides higher quality video with lower bitrates, ideal for transmission over wireless networks. The drawback is that it is approximately 2 times more complex than MPEG4 for decoding and 4 times more complex for encoding. This means that MPEG4 and H.264 will coexist for some time with H.264 being used for content provided applications such as streaming and mobile TV and MPEG4 for user creation tools like the camcorder.”
“We are leading the market with hardware designs capable of decoding MPEG4, H.263 and H.264 video.” Kaikkonen continues “In combination with our software technologies we enable silicon providers to offer the full spectrum of mobile multimedia applications on one chip in an easy-to-integrate package. “
