Accelerated Technology Announces USB On-The-Go Support Now Available for Embedded Developers Using the Nucleus RTOS
MOBILE, Ala. - Nov. 30, 2004 -Accelerated Technology®, a Mentor Graphics division (Nasdaq: MENT), today announced USB On-The-Go (OTG) support for the Nucleus® Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). Developers using the Nucleus USB OTG software can now build products that communicate with each other via Universal Serial Bus (USB) without requiring a PC connection. For example, a digital camera can directly connect to a personal digital assistant (PDA), or a mobile phone can connect to another mobile phone, as long as each device is USB OTG-compatible.
USB OTG grew from the increasing need for portable devices to be able to communicate directly with each other as the culture of technology moves away from a PC-centric world. One of the important features of USB OTG is that the standard does not require a host PC in order for the devices to communicate with each other. USB OTG devices, known as dual-role peripherals, can act as limited hosts or peripherals, as well as connect to a host PC. For example, acting as a host device, a digital camera can print photos directly to a printer. Acting as a peripheral device, the camera can download photos to a PC. The Nucleus USB OTG software enables a wide variety of devices to communicate and share data directly, removing the PC as an intermediate device.
The Nucleus USB OTG software adheres to the USB OTG specification, which is a supplement to the USB 2.0 specification. It also implements the protocols required to support an OTG dual-role device for role switching and session negotiation.
The Nucleus USB OTG software consists of three components: a USB OTG stack, USB OTG class driver and USB OTG controller driver. The Nucleus USB OTG component is complete, fast, small and portable just like all the Nucleus USB family of products. It takes advantage of the Nucleus software services and runs on any system supported by the Nucleus PLUS and the Nucleus microiPLUS kernels. Drivers are available for additional Nucleus software components including the Nucleus NET TCP/IP protocol stack, the Nucleus FILE file management software and the Nucleus GRAFIX portable graphics package. On the hardware side, the Nucleus USB OTG software provides the controller driver for the Mentor Graphics Inventra full-speed (12Mps) and high-speed (480Mps) USB OTG hardware controllers.
"The Nucleus USB OTG software and Inventra hardware IP provide a synergistic embedded development combination that is difficult to beat," said Robert Day, director of marketing, Embedded Systems Division, Mentor Graphics. "With it, customers can now take advantage of ready to use, out-of-the-box USB OTG support to accelerate their time to market for embedded USB OTG designs and differentiate their products in the competitive and rapidly growing portable devices market."
Availability and Pricing
The Nucleus embedded software is licensed with source code and without royalty fees. Available now, licenses for the Nucleus USB OTG stack start at U.S. $19,995 and licenses for the Nucleus USB OTG class drivers begin at U.S. $4,995.
