ITT Cannon beefs up key switch lines Eden Prairie, Minn. - ITT Industries' Cannon division has added new models and options to its K12 and K6 key switch offerings, as well as smaller sizes. Since their gold-plated contacts are light and flexed against each other, the switches offer a high degree of vibration resistance even for large vibrations; a high life expectancy; and guaranteed switching even after several years without actuations, according to the company. The switches also offer distinctive tactile feedback and can be designed to meet particular customer requirements. They are used in cranes, forklifts, tractors and similar equipment as well as in avionics, computers and networking, measurement, medical and automotive applications. The switches' gold-plated contacts have a geometry that ensures reliable switching while simultaneously cleaning the contacts during each actuation. Switching voltage ranges from 2 to 30 Vdc with switching currents from 10 m icroamps to 100 milliamps dc. New versions include the K12G single-pole double-throw, normally open (NO); K12GOL and K12PL, each with one light-emitting diode and available in several colors; and the K12C, which is IP67-sealed by a rubber cap. Buttons and floating caps are also available. Standard travel lengths are 1, 1.5 and 2 mm with operating forces of 2.5, 3.5 and 5 newtons. Other forces are available on request. K12 switches can deliver more than 1 million cycles. K6 switches are single-pole single-throw, NO momentary-action devices offering a choice of travel lengths from 1 to 1.5 mm with standard operating force of 2, 3 and 5 newtons, with and without LEDs. New versions include an SMT switch suitable for IR-reflow soldering. The switches are smaller than earlier versions, requiring printed-circuit-board space of 10.9 x 7.4 mm x 8.4 mm high. The K6 switches have a 200,000-cycle life span. The K12 and K6 units are available with center-positioned, 3-mm T1 and argus T1 LEDs. Standard colors are yellow, green, red and orange. Blue and white are available on request. The 3-mm LEDs are suited for illuminating a small surface on top of the switch. The argus LEDs in combination with a reflector are used to deliver homogenous illumination. Pricing for the K12 devices ranges from 50 cents to $2; the K6 version ranges from 35 cents to $1.50, depending on the model. Call (952) 934-4400
