Infineon Technologies Licenses MIPS Technologies 64-Bit Core For Use In Next Generation IADs And LAN Switching System-On-a-Chip Solutions
Infineon will license both the MIPS64 5Kc processor core and a MIPS64 5Kc-based subsystem, which will be integrated into Infineon's powerful system-on-chip (SoC) solutions. Infineon chose the 5Kc core based on its recognition as a de-facto standard in the 64-bit communication processor market. "The MIPS64 5Kc core is an excellent complement to our portfolio of high performance real-time control and DSP core architectures. Access to this core will allow us to broaden the array of integrated and scalable broadband communications SoC solutions we offer to our global customer base," said Gerhard Geiger, senior vice president and general manager of the communications group of Infineon. "When combined with recent acquisitions and partnerships undertaken by Infineon, this agreement will further strengthen our position as a key technology supplier to high growth markets, such as LAN switching and IADs." "Infineon is a significant new licensee for the MIPS European operation. The agreement demonstrates how our flexible, customer-focused business model is ideally suited to demanding requirements of world-class semiconductor companies," said John Hall, vice president of MIPS Technologies' European operations. "Having a semiconductor leader such as Infineon incorporate our flexible high performance 64-bit processor core into its broad portfolio provides further proof of our position as a primary provider of powerful microprocessor architectures in the communications market. Infineon is the latest leading semiconductor company to benefit from our European design center in Denmark - a center of excellence with more than fifty design engineers assisting customers implement cores in an SoC environment to create new application platforms."
