Imagination Technologies Debuts Silicon-Based Mobile TV Reciever IP Platform at ARM Dev Con 2005Santa Clara, USA, October 4th 2005: Imagination Technologies, a leader in system-on-chip intellectual property (SoC IP), will be demonstrating a market-leading silicon based reference platform for mobile TV at the ARM Developers' Conference, 4-6 Oct, Santa Clara Conference Center (Stand 608).
Vigo is a licensable demodulation platform for Mobile TV with multi-standard support for DVB-H and T-DMB. With low system power requirements Vigo provides the foundation of a highly-integrated mobile TV solution, reducing cost, design risk and time-to-market. Imagination Technologies has already proven the capabilities of its market-leading technologies for digital radio and television and is now offering solutions for Mobile TV standards. Combining DVB-H and T-DMB in a single platform is the logical step, allowing manufacturers to target a world market and end users to roam internationally. Imagination expects high-quality mobile video to become as much a part of daily life as mobile audio and communications are today. A second platform, including ISDB-Tss as well as DVB-H and T-DMB, is in development and slated for availability early next year. Crown Castle, the world’s largest independent owner and operator of wireless infrastructure has already begun DVB-H infrastructure trials in the USA. It is highly probably that the U.S. will be the first nation with digital mobile TV broadcasting based on DVB-H. Says David McBrien, VP business development, Imagination Technologies: “Consumers will increasingly use mobile devices to access live entertainment and information. However, video takes ten times as much bandwidth as voice so current networks can’t support high-quality multimedia and information delivery in a cost effective way. Broadcast standards like DVB-H and DMB will open this significant opportunity for exploitation.” Imagination Technologies’ IP for T-DMB Mobile TV is already integrated into products in Korea. Additionally it has been used in receivers during European DMB test-broadcasts in Berlin and Amsterdam in 2005. T-DMB has been approved by ETSI (the European Telecommunications Standards Institute). In 2006, DMB will be used to deliver live coverage of FIFA 2006 in Germany. Continues McBrien: “We’ve already licensed both DMB and DVB-H technologies to silicon producers and our IP is robust, proven in the field, and ready for integration. We offer individual IPs for baseband and video or SoC platforms, which include both those elements and a multi-threaded processor, and effectively reduce integration times and verification risk.” Built around the UCC Mobile (Universal Communications Coprocessor) signal processor, which provides PHY layer demodulation, the Vigo platform also integrates hardware to support the DVB-H Link Layer and an MTX™ embedded controller for system housekeeping.
