picoTurbo Announces pT-120 Portable Low-power 32-bit Processor Core for High-performance SOC Designs
MILPITAS, CA - October 10, 2000 - picoTurbo, Inc., a premier developer of 16/32-bit RISC embedded microprocessor cores for wireless Internet devices, announced today a very high-performance 32-bit RISC processor core for low-power consumer and portable applications. The pT-120[tm] core is targeted to 3G wireless Internet access devices, personal digital assistants, advanced digital consumer devices, high-end set-top boxes, video processing, high-performance routers and DSL/cable modems. It is the latest addition to the picoTurbo microprocessor family, which includes the pT-100[tm] and pT-110[tm] cores. The pT-120 core has a fast, lean and low-power design with an enhanced cache controller with configurable 0-64 Kbytes of Data cache and 0-64 Kbytes of configurable Instruction cache. It is optimized for SOC designs that require very high frequency, enhanced cache operation and branch prediction for superior system performance. Chip Stearns, CEO, stated, "The pT-120 core is a very powerful, highly featured and low-cost portable 32-bit microprocessor core of its kind. It can be ported to new process technologies and integrated into any low-power device, which needs cache control and requires speeds of up to 400-500 MHz. The basic die size of the core is very small, only 2.1 square millimeters in the 0.18u process, which results in a very small controller device. With picoTurbo's Turn-key IP capability, we anticipate that this core will be welcomed into the market as an alternative to much higher cost solutions." Key features of the core include the ability to execute ARM® (version 4T) instructions, code compression, DSP extensions and fast context switching. A development board and simulator will be available for fast, flexible and accurate design. The pT-120 core, which is available for licensing, will be delivered as a hard (GDS-2 format), firm (netlist) or soft core (RTL). It is foundry independent and it will be fully validated in the most advanced 0.18u silicon process and other deep sub-micron technologies.
