Announcements showcased at CES 2006 included: AMD AMD showcased a variety of personal media players (PMPs) utilizing the MIPS-Based™ Alchemy™ processor, including the Humax PMP, Explorer by Node™, Digital Cube's V43 and the FOCETM (F1-2510) by Erae Electronics. PMP designers are selecting AMD's Alchemy family of processors for integrated functionality, high performance and low-power consumption. Broadcom Corporation Broadcom® introduced the MIPS-Based BCM7400 dual-channel AVC/VC-1/MPEG-2 video decoder system-on-a-chip (SoC) that enables cable, satellite and IP-network equipment manufacturers to cost-effectively develop high-performance media centers. The new Broadcom chip integrates all of the required media center technology to securely access, store and share multiple types of digital media content, including high-definition TV (HDTV) programs, video-on-demand, Internet content, digital video, music and photos, and voice over IP services. In a related announcement, Funai Electric Co. demonstrated a new set-top box using High Definition Advanced Video Compression technology, based on the BCM7401 processor.
Planetweb Planetweb® announced the SpectraWorks™ embedded user interface software platform for digital television applications will support Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc.'s (TAEC's) powerful MIPS-Based TX49 RISC CPU/ASSPs. Utilizing the SpectraWorks platform, Planetweb is developing a suite of products designed to satisfy the Federal Communication Commission's rules mandating U.S. broadcast television services conversion to digital operation. PMC-Sierra PMC-Sierra announced the availability of a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Phone reference platform that enables Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)-like performance with toll-quality voice services and enhanced security. The compact integrated design features PMC-Sierra's MIPS-Based MSP2020 Secure VoIP processor and certified Voice Processing Software, allowing Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to address market demands of functionality, competitive price, reliability and security requirements. Trident Microsystems Trident Microsystems introduced its second-generation, MIPS-Based HiDTVTM Pro Digital Video Processor Family. Tailored for the era of high-definition content, and featuring a sixth-generation, twelve-bit implementation of Trident's DCReTM video processor, the HiDTV Pro Family simultaneously decodes two high-definition video streams for the most demanding high-definition video displays. ViXS ViXS announced the availability of the MIPS-Based XCode™ 2100 family of single and dual stream digital/analog video processors. ViXS' XCode 2100 series is the world's most integrated video processing core -- a family of single-chip video processing units (VPU) that combine MPEG encoding, high-definition transcoding/transrating, world-compliant content protection, and conditional access with hardware encryption/decryption.
WISchip/Micronas & Digital 5 WISchip International Ltd., a Micronas group company, announced a partnership with Digital 5 to develop and co-market a digital media server (DMS) reference design. The collaboration combines the MIPS-Based Micronas/WISchip Cypher 7108-based Network PVR reference design hardware platform with Digital 5 network attached storage (NAS) media server middleware, a complete NAS media server software solution. The joint agreement will enable consumer electronics ODMs and OEMs to rapidly develop digital media server products for the new age of the digital home, reducing their costs and significantly speeding their time to market. Zoran Corporation Zoran introduced the MIPS-Based Activa 220 and 230 processors, additional members of the recently announced family of breakthrough DVD recorder solutions. In addition to the DVD read/write front-end and back-end functions of the recently announced Activa 200 processor, the Activa 220 SoC adds a high-speed integrated drive electronics (IDE) interface to enable full personal video recorder (PVR) functionality for combination hybrid optical disk drive (ODD) and hard disk drive (HDD) recorders. The Activa 230 processor integrates two digital video broadcast (DVB) transport processor interfaces with complete free-to-air support for dual tuners in addition to the complete optical disk drive ODD+HDD feature set.
