Via Licensing Expands Call for Patents for Its IEEE 802.16 Patent Licensing ProgramCall for essential patents now includes IEEE 802.16e Mobile WiMAX San Francisco, January 19, 2006—Via Licensing Corporation is pleased to expand its outstanding call for essential patents reading on the IEEE 802.16™ specification to include the IEEE 802.16e™ amendment. The IEEE 802.16e specification, titled "Air Interface for Fixed and Mobile Broadband Wireless Access Systems—Amendment for Physical and Medium Access Control Layers for Combined Fixed and Mobile Operation in Licensed Bands," is identified by the IEEE as document number IEEE Std 802.16e-2005 and is also referred to as Mobile WiMAX. Mobile WiMAX devices such as mobile phones and portable computers will have the ability to travel between base stations while maintaining long-range broadband connectivity for voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), audio, video, and data services. The goal of expanding the call for patents is to identify owners of the patents that are necessary for the practice of the IEEE 802.16 wireless networking standards listed above. Essential patents are understood to be issued patents that have one or more claims that would necessarily be infringed by the implementation or use of the IEEE 802.16 standard. Any entity that believes it has a granted patent that is essential to the normative portions of the IEEE 802.16 standard and wishes to participate in a group of essential patent holders jointly offering to license their patents is invited to contact Via Licensing Corporation for information about how to submit patents for evaluation.
