Lionic Adopts Altera's Nios II Processor and Cyclone Series of FPGAs for Silicon-Based Antivirus SolutionsSan Jose, Calif. and Hsinchu City, Taiwan, April 5, 2006—To generate cost and performance benefits from its ePavis family of low-cost network security devices, Lionic Corporation has adopted the Nios® II embedded processor and CycloneTM series FPGAs from Altera Corporation (NASDAQ:ALTR), the two companies announced today. “In order to cost-effectively develop solutions that are at the forefront of antivirus technology, it is imperative that we work with the industry leader in low-cost programmable logic,” said Eric Lu, CEO, Lionic. “Altera’s Cyclone series FPGAs and Nios II processor make it possible to create solutions that allow our customers to add high-speed security features at minimal cost and that also adapt to their changing demands.” Lionic’s antivirus technology is primarily used in the customer premises equipment (CPE) market, which requires high-volume production and the flexibility to meet rapidly changing market conditions. ePavis devices deliver antivirus and anti-intrusion functions for this market, as well as anti-spam, anti-phishing and anti-spyware capabilities. The Nios II processor enables Lionic’s ePavis devices to be updated in the field to support additional virus definitions. Lionic’s portfolio of semiconductors also includes an ASIC product with an embedded Nios II processor, which serves the low-performance end of its market. The Nios II embedded processor implemented in Cyclone series FPGAs enables Lionic to achieve fixed throughputs of up to 200 Mbps, regardless of packet size and the number of viruses being scanned. Additionally, Cyclone-series FPGAs provide built-in SRAM and offer powerful functionalities, such as double-data rate (DDR) interface and phase-locked loops (PLLs), at a substantially lower cost than that of competing solutions. “Our programmable technology delivers the flexibility of software and the performance of hardware. This enables Lionic to efficiently develop products that meet the challenges of the ever-changing network security landscape,” said Danny Biran, Altera’s vice president of product and corporate marketing. “Altera’s programmable solutions are optimal vehicles for the introduction and advancement of innovative products like Lionic’s ePavis family.” Customers using the ePavis network security devices include top network solutions vendors in Europe and Asia. For example, DrayTek of Taiwan, a leading worldwide supplier of remote access solutions for SOHO users, has incorporated Lionic solutions into its broadband security router.
