Samsung passes on ARM power management software
Peter Clarke, EE Times
(06/27/2006 6:09 AM EDT) LONDON — When Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. licensed a National Semiconductor Corp. power management function block, recently announced, it did not license the complementary Intelligent Energy Management (IEM) software from ARM Holdings plc. Samsung was expected to integrate the Advanced Power Controller (APC) technology into integrated circuits designed for mobile phones, but did not license the IEM. This is despite the fact that it worked on power management specification with National Semiconductor Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.) and ARM (Cambridge, U.K.) and Matsushita Electric Industrial, Philips Semiconductor and STMicroelectronics and despite claims that the IEM software, can further reduce power and energy consumption demands, beyond the level achieved by the APC, as much as 25 percent to 30 percent. |
