Renesas Technology Releases SH-MobileL3V Application Processor for Digital TV Broadcast Capable Mobile Phones
On-chip high-performance image processing engine enabling VGA-size video recording and playback Tokyo, July 10, 2006 −− Renesas Technology Corp. today announced the SH-MobileL3V (product name: SH7354), designed specifically for use in terrestrial digital broadcast capable mobile phones, as a new member of the SH-Mobile *1 Series of mobile phone application processors. Sample shipments will begin in August 2006 in Japan. The SH-MobileL3V is an application processor resulting from optimization of a high-end mobile phone SH-Mobile Series model for use in terrestrial digital broadcasting and video applications. Features of the SH-MobileL3V are summarized below. (1) | High-performance on-chip functions supporting terrestrial digital broadcasting | | One-segment broadcasting for Japanese ISDB-T*2 terrestrial digital broadcasting capable mobile phones uses H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (referred to below as H.264) as a moving image compression standard. The SH-MobileL3V incorporates a VPU4 (Video Processing Unit 4) H.264-compatible high-performance video processing IP, and achieves 30 fps (frame per second) encoding and decoding performance at VGA definition. This makes possible smooth video display and recording equivalent to that of a standard TV. With digital broadcasting services being introduced in various countries throughout the world, the SH-MobileL3V can also support systems such as DVB-II*3 in Europe and DMB*4 in South Korea. Moreover, since the VPU4 can also handle MPEG-4 processing, the SH-MobileL3V can implement a variety of moving image applications such as video mail, video phones, and video clips. | (2) | Five-megapixel-class camera module support and image processing functions | | The SH-MobileL3V incorporates a camera interface that allows direct connection to a 5-megapixel-class camera module, together with image processing functions, and can perform high-speed capture of large-volume image data from a high-definition camera, and versatile image processing. Also included are a 24-bit LCD interface supporting a 16.78 million color LCD panel, together with high-image-quality compensation functions, enabling a variety of high-quality displays to be implemented. | (3) | High-performance CPU core providing ample power for one-segment broadcast display processing | | The SH-MobileL3V incorporates an SH4AL-DSP CPU core that achieves high processing performance of 389 MIPS (million instructions per second) at a maximum operating frequency of 216 MHz, providing ample power for one-segment broadcast display browser processing. Ample performance is also available for parallel processing of multiple large-load applications, and operations by a general-purpose OS such as Linux*5 that imposes a greater processing load than a dedicated OS. | Product Background In recent years mobile phone system functions have expanded to include diverse and sophisticated multimedia applications such as games, camera functions, and video telephony, and as communication speeds improve, increasingly high-speed, complex, and diversified applications are appearing in the market. With this trend seen likely to further intensify, digital TV broadcasting is one new service that has started up in various parts of the world, and is expected to develop rapidly as the next killer application for mobile phones. Renesas Technology led the world with the release of the SH-Mobile Series of dedicated microprocessors for application processing in mobile phone systems, and has contributed to the advancement of multimedia applications for mobile phones. Renesas was also among the first to release digital TV broadcast capable products, and these are used in a wide variety of devices. Now, in response to the rapid increase in the popularity of digital TV broadcast capable mobile phones, Renesas has developed the SH-MobileL3V offering excellent video processing capability at lower cost. Additional Product Details An SH-Mobile Series processor is connected to the baseband LSI of a mobile phone system and performs dedicated voice, video, or similar multimedia application processing. Dedicated interfaces allow connection to baseband LSIs of various systems, and the provision of such features as on-chip accelerator functions and various interfaces, as well as a power management system specifically for mobile phone use, make it possible to customize mobile phones and achieve a market edge. The SH-MobileL3V incorporates a VPU4 high-performance video processing IP. The VPU4 supports both the H.264 video compression standard used in one-segment broadcasting and the MPEG-4 standard used up to now for video, video telephony, and suchlike applications. The VPU4 performs almost all video processing by hardware. Consequently, the CPU can execute other processing while the VPU4 is processing H.264-format video data, enabling the frequency to be kept low, and thus making it possible to achieve lower power consumption. The SH-MobileL3V incorporates an SH4AL-DSP CPU core, and achieves high processing performance of 389 MIPS at a maximum operating frequency of 216 MHz. This CPU core provides unit-frequency processing performance of 1.8 MIPS/MHz, ample for operating a browser with one-segment broadcasting or similar digital TV capability. To support the higher pixel counts of the latest built-in cameras, the SH-MobileL3V also incorporates a camera interface that allows direct connection of a 5-megapixel-class camera module − the highest pixel count capability of all SH-Mobile Series models. This makes it possible to capture large volumes of image data from a high-definition camera, and perform various kinds of display, such as electronic image zoom display, screen overlapping, and so forth, by means of an OSD (On Screen Display) function, HWC (Hardware Cursor) function, and the like. Moreover SH-MobileL3V supports YUV data of BT.709 specifications. As a result, it is possible to perform extraction of TV broadcast data and conversion to a JPEG image without loss of image quality. The SH-MobileL3V also features a variety of other on-chip peripheral functions suited to mobile phone systems, including an LCD controller supporting 24-bit TFT color liquid crystal panels, an SD memory card*6 interface, a SIM card interface, and a sound interface. The package used is a 281-pin CSP (9 mm x 11 mm x 1.4 mm, 0.5 mm pin pitch). Renesas Technology will continue to develop products that keep pace with evolving multimedia applications and higher speeds in mobile phone systems, and to ensure the timely release of products that fully meet the needs of the market.
