Virage Logic's Silicon Aware Star Memory System Exceeds 100,000,000 Units
New Enhancements to Further Reduce Time-to-Volume, Cost -- the Top Reasons Cited For Prevalent Use of STAR Memory System
FREMONT, Calif.--July 17, 2006--Virage Logic Corporation (Nasdaq:VIRL), a pioneer in Silicon Aware IP(TM) and leading provider of semiconductor intellectual property (IP) platforms, today announced its Silicon Aware Self-Test and Repair (STAR) Memory System(TM) has exceeded 100,000,000 units shipped. The STAR Memory System provides cost-effective on-chip testing and repairing of designs embedding megabits of memories, resulting in faster time-to-market, lower test cost, smaller area and better yield for complex System-on-Chip (SoC) designs. The STAR Memory System, first introduced in 2002 and in volume production in 180 nanometer (nm) to 90nm-based designs, remains the industry's only integrated, embedded memory self-test and self-repair solution and now includes new enhancements that continue to reduce costs associated with area and shorten time-to-market. These new features include the new STAR Shared Fuse Processor(TM), which can reduce fuse block area 5-10X by intelligently combining and managing fuses in a single location to support repair capability for all repairable memories on a single chip. The STAR Shared Fuse Processor also enables the use of e-fuse technology, which can shave weeks off the manufacturing cycle. The latest version of STAR Builder(TM), which automates the process of inserting the STAR Memory System into the functional hierarchy of an SoC, has been enhanced to greatly reduce insertion time in hierarchical designs to help accelerate the overall product development schedule. "The ability to tailor parts quickly to support customer demand is critical in the networking application space, which is why we find e-fuse implementations so attractive," said Gene Scuteri, vice president of Engineering, Telecommunications and Enterprise Networking for Agere Systems. "Virage Logic's STAR Memory System, with its STAR Shared Fuse Processor solution, makes it easy to quickly and successfully implement e-fuse, with the added benefit of a reduction in fuse block area." "We've come to rely on the STAR Memory System's yield optimization capabilities in our Burst Mode Engine (DSP Engines) because time-to-volume is critical to our success," said Joshua Rom, vice president of Operations, Ikanos Communications. "With their highly differentiated IP and superior customer support services, Virage Logic is our trusted IP partner." "As the industry moves to more advanced process nodes such as 90nm and below, the impact of yield on time-to-volume becomes increasingly important so it's not surprising that nearly 20 percent of our 100,000,000 units are from 90nm-based designs. Also, the need for rapid time-to-volume is especially critical in the consumer electronics market where we've seen extensive use of the STAR Memory System in such high-volume products as MP3 players, gaming stations, and cellular phones," said Jim Ensell, senior vice president of Marketing and Business Development at Virage Logic. "As we continue to enhance the STAR Memory System with the new STAR Shared Fuse Processor and STAR Builder capabilities, we are enabling our customers to reduce fuse area by 5-10X and automate integration to further accelerate their time-to-market." About Virage Logic's STAR Memory System The STAR Memory System provides the most integrated solution for the cost effective embedding, on-chip testing and repairing of multi-megabit memories. High-Speed, High-Density and Ultra-Low-Power STAR and Area, Speed and Power (ASAP) Memory(TM) memories can be incorporated into a STAR Memory System to address a broad range of SoC design requirements. The STAR Memory System consists of a complete solution allowing users to select and automatically integrate all of the pieces associated with the system. The STAR Shared Fuse Processor allows users to reduce routing complexity and drastically reduce fuse area while the STAR Builder automated integration tool enables users to better meet aggressive time-to-market requirements. With customers experiencing yield improvements of up to 250 percent, the STAR Memory System can potentially save millions of dollars in recovered silicon, substantially reduce test costs, and achieve shorter time-to-volume. Price and Availability of the STAR Shared Fuse Processor and STAR Builder The STAR Memory System's new STAR Shared Fuse Processor and enhanced STAR Builder are available today. STAR Shared Fuse Processor pricing starts at $30,000. Existing STAR Memory System customers that are currently on maintenance will receive STAR Builder at no cost. About Virage Logic Corporation Founded in 1996, Virage Logic Corporation (Nasdaq:VIRL) rapidly established itself as a technology and market leader in providing advanced embedded memory intellectual property (IP) for the design of complex integrated circuits. Now, as the company celebrates its 10th anniversary, it is a global leader in semiconductor IP platforms comprising embedded memories, logic, and I/Os and is pioneering the development of a new class of IP called Silicon Aware IP(TM). Silicon Aware IP tightly integrates Physical IP (memory, logic and I/Os) with the embedded test, diagnostic, and repair capabilities of Infrastructure IP to help ensure manufacturability and optimized yield at the advanced process nodes. Virage Logic's highly differentiated product portfolio provides higher performance, lower power, higher density and optimal yield to foundries, integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) and fabless customers who develop products for the consumer, communications and networking, hand-held and portable, and computer and graphics markets. The company uses its FirstPass-Silicon(TM) Characterization Lab for certain products to help ensure high quality, reliable IP across a wide range of foundries and process technologies. The company also prides itself on providing superior customer support and was recently named Customer Service Leader of the Year in the Semiconductor IP Market by Frost & Sullivan. Headquartered in Fremont, California, Virage Logic has R&D, sales and support offices worldwide. For more information, visit www.viragelogic.com.
