Infineon Multimedia Platform Selected by LGE for New EDGE Mobile PhonesMunich, Germany – July 17, 2006 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE/NYSE: IFX) today announced that LG Electronics, Inc. (LGE), Seoul, Korea, has chosen Infineon as phone platform supplier for their new EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) mobile handsets. Beginning with the recent introduction of new phones by LGE, the MP-E platform from Infineon will be used in a series of EDGE mobile phones from LGE, the number-four mobile phone supplier in the world. The Infineon platform, provided as a reference design, includes the baseband processor, the RF transceiver for four frequency ranges, the power management circuitry, Bluetooth chips, and a complete EDGE phone software suite. “Infineon is proud to supply leading-edge technology for LGE’s new series of mobile phones offering high-speed data rates and multimedia capabilities,” said Prof. Dr. Hermann Eul, member of the Infineon Management Board and President of the Infineon Communication Solutions Business Group. “Our broad system integration know-how, sophisticated protocol stack and user interface software, combined with competency in reference design platforms, results in solutions with a favorable price-performance ratio. The MP-E platform will allow LGE to introduce a variety of EDGE models all based on the same core architecture.” Based on figures from market research company Strategy Analytics, LGE is a fast-growing mobile phone supplier, reaching a market share of 6.9 percent of the global market in the first quarter of 2006 with an increase in shipments year-over-year of 40.5 percent. According to information from the same source, the number of EDGE mobile phones will grow from about 77 million in the year 2005 to more than 500 million in 2009. Within the next three years, almost every second mobile phone will be an EDGE device. EDGE phones can reach data transmission rates up to three times higher than today’s GPRS devices. The MP-E hardware and software reference design includes Infineon’s state-of-the-art baseband, RF and power management chip, complemented by cutting-edge protocol stacks, the APOXI application framework and a fully customizable APOXI reference MMI (Man-Machine-Interface). The MMI offers a broad variety of pre-integrated applications. A customer has to adjust only 30 percent of the software to the needs of its target audience, opposed to writing all of the software from scratch. The APOXI software suite significantly shortens the time to adapt a cell phone to certain markets or operators. Some of the features supported by the MP-E platform are: GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Quadband RF Bands 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, video playback and record (MPEG4, H.263), video streaming, camera support, MP3, Bluetooth, Infrared, USB 2.0.
