Ericsson Licenses ARM® Microprocessor Cores for Bluetooth[tm] and Fast Internet Access
ARM [(LSE:ARM); (Nasdaq:ARMHY)] and Ericsson today announced that Ericsson has licensed the ARM7TDMI® processor core for use in its communication products. This agreement will enable Ericsson to re-use the ARM intellectual property among all its divisions, providing greater design and production flexibility for faster time-to-market and reduced development costs. "Bluetooth[tm] and fast Internet access to the home are key applications for Ericsson, and ARM's proven processor technology will provide an efficient and scalable platform for our high-performance, low-power system-on-chip solutions targeting these markets," said Johan Tingsborg, vice president and general manager for Datacom ICs at Ericsson Microelectronics AB. "By working directly with ARM and our silicon foundry partners, we will be able to further extend our technology leadership while significantly reducing time-to-market for our next-generation consumer communications products through extensive hardware and software re-use across the company." "This agreement builds upon ARM's existing relationship with Ericsson, and reflects our commitment to aligning with industry leaders in key market segments," said Mike Muller, executive vice president of Business Development for ARM. "As one of the top telecommunications OEMs, with recognized leadership in the wireless, Bluetooth and broadband network markets, Ericsson will bring a new level of innovation in Internet access technologies to the ARM partnership." ARM® processors range in performance from 60 MHz (54 MIPS) to 175 MHz (200 MIPS), extending to 300 MHz (400+ MIPS) for processor cores currently in development. The cores are noted for performance, small die size, low power consumption, tight code density, and multiple supply sources. Instruction set compatibility between processor families promotes design reuse and reduces software development time. ARM offers full system-on-chip solutions including processor cores, peripheral intellectual property, development tools, applications software, EDA tools and design services. The ARM architecture is well supported by semiconductor partners, real-time operating system providers, third-party toolchain developers, application software providers and ARM design centers.
