Xilinx and MindWay Announce New Portfolio of Broadcast Modulation Solutions
New IP modulation cores targeted for Xilinx FPGAs provide designers with lower cost-per-channel, high performance solutions
AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands -- Sept. 7, 2007 -- At the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC), Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX), the world's leading provider of programmable logic solutions, and MindWay S.r.l., an IP core and design services company, today announced availability of new digital television modulation IP cores based on Xilinx(R) Virtex(TM)-5 FPGAs and Spartan(TM)-3E FPGAs for digital video broadcast (DVB) technology. This is an integral part of global broadcasting standards for satellite, cable, and terrestrial transmission equipment. The new IP cores support DVB-T/H, DVB-C, DVB-S and ATSC 8-VSB transmission standards, enabling design engineers to quickly adopt DVB technology in their design while drastically reducing overall system cost. The programmable solution offers ultimate flexibility to adapt to user requirements and emerging next generation modulation schemes. The modulator cores perform all the digital baseband functions required for the transmission side of DVB and ATSC broadcast links. The cores accept an MPEG transport stream, perform various coding, interleaving, modulation, shaping functions, and output an I/R filtered output for use by an external modulator. A DVB-T/H Filter core is also available to perform linear and non- linear pre-distortion, spectrum shoulder filtering, and gain control depending on the 2K, 4K, or 8K transmission mode used by the DVB-T/H modulator. "The implementation of these modulation cores on Xilinx devices provides designers a lower cost-per-channel solution capable of outperforming DSP-based systems and competing FPGAs," said Michele Corvo, sales manager for MindWay. "We feel strongly that broadcasters will ultimately benefit from the performance and flexibility of our Xilinx FPGA-based designs, giving them the ability to provide cost effective, high performance solutions." "The collaboration with MindWay to deliver important modulation solutions adds a key element to our expanding broadcast portfolio," said Paolo Masini, senior manager of Broadcast Vertical Marketing at Xilinx. "Through this solid collaboration and innovative technology we are able to meet designers and broadcasters needs to maximize the use of available bandwidth."
