Alliance's core memory business returns to profitability SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Alliance Semiconductor Corp. here today reported revenues increased 108% to $28.8 million in the company's fourth fiscal quarter, ended April 1, compared to $13.9 million in the period last year. Sequentially, Alliance's sales increased 23% from $23.5 million in the previous three-month period. The memory supplier's net income ballooned to $581 million in the fourth fiscal quarter with a pre-tax gain of $908 million from the sale of its stake in a foundry venture to United Microelectronics Corp. in Taiwan. Alliance Semiconductor's earnings per share was $13.48, compared to $0.01 per share (or $600,000) last year. During the just-ended quarter, SRAM and DRAM sales accounted for 42% and 58% of Alliance's revenues, respectively. "The core business has returned to profitability," said N.D. Reddy, chairman, president and CEO of the company. He said demand was "particularly strong in the communications market segment, res ulting in record bookings of $74 million as of April 26, $32 million of which is scheduled for shipment this quarter."
