Staccato Communications Achieves WiMedia Platform Certification and Secures Additional Funding
Enabling Interoperability with Multiple Vendors, Staccato’s Ripcord™ Family is the First Single-Chip, All-CMOS Ultra Wideband Solution with Multi-Protocol Support to Earn Platform Certification
SAN DIEGO -- October 08, 2007 --Staccato Communications, an Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless technology pioneer and Certified Wireless USB leader, today announced that its Ripcord™ product family has earned official WiMedia Platform Certification. By delivering the industry’s first single-chip, all-CMOS multi-protocol Ultra Wideband solutions that are WiMedia standards-compliant, Staccato can ensure the seamless interoperability of its devices with multiple vendors. As the first-generation Ripcord products approach production, Staccato is well positioned with their single-chip, all-CMOS offerings, which are highly competitive in terms of performance and cost advantages. Staccato also announced today that it has closed an additional $17.5M in equity financing. The funding will be used to launch Staccato’s first-generation, 110nm single-chip solution, and to continue development of the company’s second-generation 65nm single-chip, Certified Wireless USB and Bluetooth v3.0 products. Investors included Allegis Capital, Bay Partners, Charles River Ventures, Formative Ventures, Interwest Partners, and Vision Capital, among others. “This additional capital allows Staccato to continue expansion of our operations and accelerate our industry leading roadmap to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations,” said Marty Colombatto, chairman and CEO for Staccato Communications. Staccato offers the Ripcord family of products based on Certified Wireless USB and the WiMedia Alliance’s UWB Common Radio Platform. The Ripcord 3500 series is implemented using leading 110nm digital CMOS process technology and is provided as a complete System-in-Package (SiP) and Wafer Chip-Scale Package (WCSP). With this product portfolio, Staccato can deliver low-cost advantages to customers compared to other multiple-chip solutions. It also enables Staccato to meet the smallest form factor requirements while delivering a fast time-to-market. Utilizing Staccato’s Protocol Independent Kernel™ (PIK) enabling Certified Wireless USB, Ripcord is capable of supporting Bluetooth v3.0, WiMedia IP, and new mobile services including mobile wireless video and Personal Area Social Networking (PASN). The solution’s Intellectual Property Right (IPR) protection is afforded by the WiMedia Alliance and USB-IF. “This certification milestone will have a significant impact on the market as it ensures that Certified Wireless USB, Bluetooth v3.0 and other upper layer protocols can all coexist. Staccato’s ability to offer multiple protocols running simultaneously on the same single-chip solution will accelerate adoption in PC, CE, and mobile devices,” said Fiona Thomson, market analyst, IMS Research. “Achieving WiMedia Platform Certification demonstrates Staccato’s commitment to delivering the best-in-class products to our PC, CE and mobile device customers in that we not only offer single-chip solutions, but also a solution capable of simultaneous support of multiple protocols including Certified Wireless USB and Bluetooth v3.0,” said Roberto Aiello, co-founder and CTO at Staccato Communications. “Our architecture and platform are now certified interoperable and compliant, which enables multi-vendor interoperability and promises lower customer risk.” Staccato’s 110nm highly-integrated digital CMOS silicon includes RF, Digital Baseband, Media Access Controller (MAC), Memory, 32-bit RISC Processor, Encryption Engine and various I/O including USB 2.0 Host, USB 2.0 Device and SDIO 1.1 Device. The deployment of the Ripcord solution will empower the personal computer, consumer electronic and mobile device industries with high-speed wireless personal area network (WPAN) solutions optimized for cost, power consumption and form-factor.
