Renesas Technology Releases 50 New MCU Products Comprising 11 Groups, Each Built Around the R32C/100 CPU Core and Integrating High-Speed On-Chip Flash Memory
Extensive lineup of MCU solutions with peripheral functions for automotive applications, such as a FlexRay controller and CAN, and al variety of on-chip flash memory capacity, for an excellent balance of cost to performance Tokyo -- February 14, 2008 -- Renesas Technology Corp. today announced the 50 new products comprising 11 groups as new additions to its R32C/100 Series of MCUs with on-chip flash memory for automotive systems. The MCUs in this series are built around the R32C/100 high-performance 32-bit CPU core, the most advanced available in the M16C Family of complex instruction set computer (CISC) MCUs. Sample shipments will begin in May 2008 in Japan with the R32C/120 Group and R32C/121 Group, which are suitable for applications such as body control. These will be followed in July 2008 by the R32C/133 Group and R32C/134 Group with on-chip peripheral functions including a communication controller supporting FlexRay™,*1 a next-generation automotive communications protocol. Finally, sample shipments of the R32C/151, R32C/152, R32C/153, R32C/156, R32C/157, R32C/160, and R32C/161 Groups will begin in July 2008 sequentially in Japan . Product Background Recently in the automotive systems field, the number of electronic control units (ECUs) used per vehicle has increased dramatically, and the resulting increase in the volume of data transferred over automotive LANs is striking. In addition, control methods are becoming more complex, which has led to an increase in the size of the software programs used to implement them. As a result, demand is growing for MCUs (the core devices in ECUs) with sophisticated functions and improved performance to execute large programs rapidly. Renesas Technology has developed and delivered to the market MCU products designed to meet this demand. The R32C/100 Series, part of the M16C Family of CISC MCUs, aims to meet the need for still higher performance with an extensive product lineup offering advanced on-chip peripheral functions. These include communication functions such as multichannel CAN*2 support and a communication controller implementing the FlexRay high-speed communication protocol. Features (1) | Common features | | The features common to all 11 product groups are summarized below. 1) | R32C/100 CPU core, the top-end CPU core in the M16C Family | | The new MCUs deliver approximately twice the processing performance of the M32C/90 Series when operating at the same frequency, thanks to enhancements that include an improved CPU architecture, 32-bit multiplier, single-precision FPU, and high-functionality barrel shifter. | 2) | High-speed and highly reliable flash memory with a proven track record | | The on-chip flash memory combines fast read/write performance with excellent reliability. The write speed of the new MCUs is about three times faster than that of the M32C/80 Series, allowing large amounts of data to be written to the flash memory in much less time. This enables a substantial improvement in in-line programming throughput for manufacturers engaged in mass production. | 3) | On-chip flash memory that can be used instead of E2PROM to store data | | The new MCUs feature on-chip flash memory for data storage called electrically erasable programmable read only memory (E 2 PROM) emulation flash (E 2 Data Flash). This E 2 Data Flash is available of 100,000 rewrite cycles and small graduation 32byte block size for erase function as key feature, and includes a background operation (BGO) function that allows the CPU to access programs stored in the flash memory while the contents of the E 2 Data Flash is being rewritten. This function provides flexibility equivalent to E 2 PROM, since data can be rewritten while an application is running. It also contributes to reduced overall system cost, because external E 2 PROM, which was previously required for storing initial parameters and settings, is no longer needed. Alternately, there are product versions available with no E 2 Data Flash. | 4) | New single-wire debugging (NSD) interface | | On-board debugging functionality, which allows evaluation and calibration to be performed with the MCU installed in the finished product, is in demand for applications such as automotive systems. The new MCUs incorporate a single-wire debugging interface that enables connection of an emulator via a single wire, which carries the signals used for debugging. This allows debugging of all functions, and the on-chip flash memory can be programmed "on board " via the same interface. | 5) | Extensive on-chip peripheral functions | | Each new MCU product group includes a full range of on-chip peripheral functions useful for automotive control applications. These include timers for three-phase motor control, watchdog timer, advanced intelligent I/O, A/D converter, serial interface, direct memory access (DMA) controller, and CAN. In addition, power consumption can be reduced by using the on-chip oscillator in conjunction with wait mode. | | (2) | Features of individual groups | | In addition to the common features listed under (1) above, these groups are wide range lineup products combining of different flash memory and RAM capacities, the configuration and number of channels of CAN, LIN*3 , and other interface, and so on. This enables the developer to select a product that best matches the system specifications. The features specific to each group are summarized below. 1) | R32C/120 and R32C/121 | | Both groups have a maximum operating frequency of 64 MHz and use a 100-pin LQFP package. The R32C/120 is available with 128 Kbytes or 256 Kbytes of flash memory, and the R32C/121 with 128 Kbytes, 256 Kbytes, 384 Kbytes, or 512 Kbytes of flash memory. The basic peripheral function configuration of both groups is suitable for a variety of ECU applications. | 2) | R32C/133 and R32C/134 | | Both groups have a maximum operating frequency of 60 MHz and use a 144-pin LQFP package. They are both available with 256 Kbytes, 384 Kbytes, or 512 Kbytes of flash memory. A FlexRay controller (version 2.1 compliant), licensed from Robert Bosch GmbH of Germany, is implemented on-chip. FlexRay is an automotive LAN standard that supports high-speed communication at up to 10 Mbps. In comparison with the CAN (maximum 1 Mbps) automotive LAN standard, FlexRay delivers faster data transfer and better reliability. Demand for FlexRay is expected to expand in areas such as X-by-Wire*4 applications that use electronic control to manipulate mechanical systems and vehicle control applications requiring a high level of reliability. | 3) | R32C/151, R32C/152, R32C/153, R32C/156, and R32C/157 | | All groups have a maximum operating frequency of 64 MHz and use a 144-pin LQFP package. The R32C/151, R32C/152, and R32C/153 are available with 768 Kbytes or 1,024 Kbytes of flash memory, and the R32C/156 and R32C/157 with 256 Kbytes, 384 Kbytes, or 512 Kbytes of flash memory. The MCUs in these groups can be configured with up to four CAN and eight LIN (hardware frame based) channels, with a variety of combinations of different numbers of channels available. This enables the developer to select a product version with precisely the number of communication channels required by the system. In addition, the maximum flash memory capacity of 1,024 Kbytes provides support for applications using large software programs. | 4) | R32C/160 and R32C/161 | | Both groups have a maximum operating frequency of 48 MHz and use an 80-pin LQFP package. They are both available with 128 Kbytes or 256 Kbytes of flash memory. These groups feature a compact 80-pin package and a slimmed down selection of functions, making them suitable for applications where the emphasis is on low cost and compact size. | | Renesas Technology is currently developing a bus driver with support for FlexRay and plans to eventually offer system solutions including MCU and bus driver components.
