EXCESS BANDWIDTH CORPORATION BECOMES MIPS TECHNOLOGIES' LICENSEE; OBTAINS MIPS32-BASED PROCESSOR CORE LICENSE Communications Startup To Apply 32-bit MIPS-based[tm] Processor IP (Intellectual Property) In Next Generation Very-High-Bit-Rate Communications Solutions MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif, (January 13, 2000) MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:MIPS) today announced that Excess Bandwidth Corporation, a developer of ICs for high-bandwidth communication systems, has acquired a license for MIPS Technologies' MIPS32[tm] processor core technology. Excess Bandwidth will utilize the processor in communication ICs that will enable the next generation of high-speed communications. "We chose MIPS Technologies' IP because it fits well with our technology and product development programs, " points out Steve Dines, Excess Bandwidth Corporation's CEO. "MIPS Technologies' 32-bit processor provides the level of intelligence appropriate to solving broadband data communications problems and our license gives us the ability to apply it in a cost-effective manner. With our license, we can implement powerful high-speed communications solutions that takes full advantage of the powerful 32-bit technology and still gives us the flexibility to design to our chosen process and technology guidelines." "MIPS Technologies' 32-bit processor cores can be licensed in a variety of ways" said Derek Meyer, vice president of field operations at MIPS Technologies. "Broadband communications semiconductor companies such as Excess Bandwidth Corporation can take advantage of the huge base of MIPS-compatible development tools, and still choose the design implementation and manufacturing technology that best fits their internal technology development." "This agreement helps position MIPS Technologies as the leading embedded processor architecture for high-end communications systems," notes Linley Gwennap, principal analyst at The Linley Group. "This alliance is good for Excess Bandwidth Corporation because it gives them a jump-start on developing high performance SOC communications IC solutions." About Excess Bandwidth Corp.
