Will Silicon Image's LiquidHD gamble pay off?
Junko Yoshida, EE Times
(08/14/2009 1:38 PM EDT) SUNNYVALE, Calif. — While Silicon Image is methodically paving the way for LiquidHD -- a new protocol suite designed for networked digital consumer devices -- by integrating Ethernet support in HDMI 1.4 spec-based chips, the company so far has yet to entice any service operators or OEMs to jump onto its bandwagon. Critics blame the proprietary nature of LiquidHD and Silicon Image's licensing scheme for its slow start. Silicon Image, a creator of HDMI technology, has become a company everyone loves to hate. HDMI is the industry's de facto point-to-point interface for uncompressed digital audio and video signals -- now adopted by virtually every new digital TV set launched on the market.
