Xilinx and Tokyo Electron Device Offers V-by-One HS Video Interface Support for Using Spartan-6 FPGAs in Consumer Video ApplicationsStandards-compliant IP core leverages high-performance, low-cost capabilities of Spartan-6 FPGAs and Xilinx Targeted Design Platforms for consumer video applications TOKYO, May 12, 2010 --Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX), announced today its support for the emerging V-by-One(R) HS video interface standard with a solution from Xilinx Alliance Member Tokyo Electron Device that combines the low-cost Spartan(R)-6 FPGA family and a standards-compliant IP core. The solution builds on Xilinx's Targeted Design Platform strategy of offering integrated application-oriented solutions to enable the rapid development of consumer video products that are compliant with the next-generation high-speed interface specification developed by THine Electronics, Inc. (JASDAQ: 6769). V-by-One HS is an open standard for allowing transmission of large amounts of video and control data to support the higher frame rates and the higher resolutions required by next-generation flat-panel displays. It enables high-speed serial data transfer technology capable of variable transfer speeds beyond 3Gbps, thus requiring far fewer channels for transferring data. V-by-One HS is being adopted by leading display manufacturers to replace previous generation (e.g. LVDS-based) solutions for high-end display products such as flat panel displays, multifunction printers, industrial camera systems, and other applications requiring fast data transfer. The V-by-One HS solution includes a validated IP core, available from Tokyo Electron Device, with all the logic functionality required to implement the standard within a Spartan-6 FPGA. Combined with the low-cost benefits of the Spartan-6 family, the solution allows developers to reduce the time, cost and risk associated with bringing next-generation video products to market. "We have seen a steady increase in the number of customers and suppliers supporting this standard since we made the V-by-One HS technical specifications available in 2008," said Masahiro Kato, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing at THine Electronics. "Solutions that combine Xilinx FPGAs and THine Electronics' V-by-One HS interface offer added value for customers by improving efficiency in system development, reducing EMI-suppression and system costs (including the cost of mechanical parts), and shortening the time-to-market." "Designers of advanced video and display applications need to be able to quickly adopt and implement emerging standards," said Harry Raftopoulos, director for consumer segment marketing at Xilinx. "Our support of the V-by-One HS interface--which is emerging as an essential next-generation data transfer interface--not only gives our customers an edge in performance and cost, but allows them to concentrate on differentiating their products with a flexible platform that meets the needs of a dynamic consumer product market." In January 2010, Xilinx introduced the Spartan-6 FPGA Consumer Video Kit to support its Targeted Design Platform for next generation digital televisions and displays. The kit is compatible with the latest video interface standards--including DisplayPort, HDMI, and LVDS--and, with the addition of the V-by-One HS evaluation IP core, is a powerful tool for improving the efficiency of cutting-edge video algorithms. Combining this IP core with the Spartan-6 FPGA Consumer Video Kit allows users to develop products with a fully compliant V-by-One HS interface. Xilinx and Tokyo Electron Device are working together to develop a V-by-One HS interface IP core for the high-performance Virtex-6 family, which is planned for the first half of 2010 on completion of testing to ensure compliance with THine Electronics' technical specifications. Tokyo Electron Device will demonstrate the V-by-One HS interface using the Spartan-6 FPGA Consumer Video Kit at the THine's booth (booth: East 33-26) during the Embedded System Expo being held in Tokyo May 12 through 14.
