MIPS Technologies Announces Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) Support for Android Platform on MIPS-Based SoCsNext Step in Driving MIPS® Architecture into Smartphones and other Advanced Mobile Devices COMPUTEX TAIPEI, Taiwan - June 1, 2010 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, announced symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) support for the Android platform running on MIPS-Based multicore SoCs. Now MIPS licensees using MIPS32® multi-threaded and multiprocessor cores can bring rich web and multimedia content to smartphones with the Android platform. As today's consumers expect increasingly advanced features and functionality in their smartphones and other advanced mobile devices, SMP enables SoC developers to provide the requisite high performance, while keeping power consumption to a minimum. Smartphones are required to concurrently run multiple tasks such as web browsing, voice calls, downloads and other functionality. With SMP support, the Android operating system can automatically and efficiently partition these tasks across cores in a multicore implementation. "It's been one year since we announced our Android on MIPS initiative, and since that time we have made great strides in making Android a viable platform for a range of consumer electronic devices," said Art Swift, vice president of marketing, MIPS Technologies. "We are seeing increasing traction for licenses of our multi-threaded and multicore products, especially for high-level applications. With SMP support for Android on MIPS, our licensees who are porting Android to these advanced processor cores can immediately benefit. Our next priority for our Android on MIPS initiative is to enable Adobe Flash Player 10.1 within the Android on MIPS framework." Several MIPS licensees are already working on designs leveraging the multi-threaded multiprocessing MIPS32 1004K Coherent Processing System (CPS) and multithreaded MIPS32 34K cores with Android. Availability Support of SMP for Android on MIPS will be available free-of-charge through the Android on MIPS community at www.mipsandroid.org in August 2010. About Android on MIPS Leveraging its leadership position in the digital home, MIPS Technologies is spearheading efforts to make Android a reality for a wide range of consumer electronic devices. With Android and the dynamic open source development community around it, developers can easily and quickly create new applications, and OEMs can leverage a fast-growing set of applications for their devices.
