The company will discuss these results and provide guidance for the fourth fiscal quarter in its quarterly earnings call today at 1:45 pm Pacific. Revenue for the third quarter was $12.7 million, a 6 percent increase sequentially to the second fiscal quarter and a 55 percent decline compared to $28.1 million for the same quarter a year ago. Revenue excluding revenue from Nintendo 64 video game products declined by 28 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago. Contract revenue was $8.6 million, an increase of 19 percent sequentially and a decrease of 28 percent compared to $12.0 million in the comparable period in fiscal 2001. Royalties were $4.1 million, a decrease of 74 percent compared to $16.1 million in the same quarter a year ago, due primarily to lower royalties from Nintendo 64 video game products. Royalties excluding royalties from Nintendo 64 were $3.1 million, a 3 percent decline sequentially and a decrease of 26 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago. The net loss for the quarter was $1.7 million compared to net income of $8.5 million for the same quarter a year ago. The diluted net loss per share for the third quarter of fiscal 2002 was $0.04 compared to net income of $0.21 per share for the same quarter a year ago. "While there are early signs of an potential economic recovery, the semiconductor industry has maintained its cautious posture toward design start activity,"" said Casey Eichler, chief financial officer. "As previously discussed, Nintendo royalties continued to decline, however we experienced increased licensing activity which resulted in revenue growth compared to the previous quarter."" "Although we had another strong quarter of new licensing activity and reasonable license revenue growth, we continue to see many of the elements in the market that have frustrated a faster recovery,"" said John Bourgoin, chairman & CEO of MIPS Technologies. "Delayed decisions and lowest cost of entry licenses are still the rule of the day. MIPS continues to control its costs while selectively strengthening the organization. Major positive events of the quarter include an advanced development agreement with Toshiba and the addition of AMD as a MIPS licensee as a result of their acquisition of Alchemy Semiconductor,"" added Bourgoin. "Both companies have the market power to drive the MIPS architecture into new markets in large volumes.""
